Dead Battery...

so i woke up this morning for work and got ready, and went to start my truck , via remote start. And i got nothing out of my truck. At first thinking, no way my $*%&% battery is not dead. but then, I said to myself, it probably doesnt work because of all the frost. So i finished packing my lunch and grabbed my stuff and headed out the door. sure enough, dead battery. What a great start to my monday....

I know when i drove last yesterday i didnt leave anything on. and i checked that this morning to make sure my dome light, lights, etc switches werent on.. and they werent.

Anyone else having bad batteries. ?????

Even if you had left something on, it should not have happened since you have battery run-down protection. There is a TSB for this issue, all that is required is a re-flash of your PCM. Call your dealer.

I do not have the remote start, but no dead batteries either (2 years and counting). Could that remote start have a lot to do with this? Maybe a high quality Chinese made remote start module was installed in these trucks? Remember, mode gadgets is better. Who cares about quality? :rant:

TECHNICIANS MAY EXPERIENCE SLOW PERFORMANCE USING THE TIS2 WEB APPLICATION WHEN REPROGRAMMING THE VEHICLE TO CORRECT THE CONDITION. TECHNICIANS MAY NOTICE THE SLOWER APPLICATION PERFORMANCE FROM MID-MORNING UNTIL LATE AFTERNOON.

 

TO ASSIST IN IMPROVING PERFORMANCE AND REDUCE PROGRAMMING TIME, IT IS RECOMMENDED TO COMPLETE THE BULLETIN PROCEDURE ON CUSTOMER VEHICLES FIRST. VEHICLES IN INVENTORY SHOULD BE PROGRAMMED DURING OFF PEAK HOURS IF SLOW PERFORMANCE IS EXPERIENCED.

Purpose

 

This bulletin provides a service procedure to reprogram the body control module (BCM). On these vehicles, and under certain conditions such as operating the radio with the engine off, the battery can become discharged, preventing engine start-up.

 

This service procedure should be completed as soon as possible on involved vehicles currently in dealer/retailer inventory and customer vehicles that return to the dealer/retailer for any type of service during the New Vehicle Limited Warranty coverage period.

Vehicles Involved

 

A list of involved vehicles currently in dealer inventory is attached to the Administrative Message (US) or Dealer Communication (Canada) used to release this bulletin. Customer vehicles that return for service, for any reason, and are still covered under the vehicle's base warranty, and are within the VIN breakpoints provided below, should be checked for vehicle eligibility in the appropriate system listed below.

Important: Dealers are to confirm vehicle eligibility prior to beginning repairs by using GMVIS. Not all vehicles within the above breakpoints may be involved.

Service Procedure

 

Important: Technicians may experience slow performance using the TIS2 web application when reprogramming the vehicle to correct the condition. Technicians may notice the slower application performance from mid-morning until late afternoon.

To assist in improving performance and reduce programming time, it is recommended to complete the bulletin procedure on customer vehicles first. Vehicles in inventory should be programmed during off peak hours if slow performance is experienced.

 

Important: The calibration numbers required for this service procedure are programmed into control modules via a Techline Tech 2® scan tool and the Techline Information System (TIS) terminal with the calibration update. Use TIS 2 Web version 2.0 for 2007 (available on 02/04/07) and on TIS DVD version 2.0/2007 or later, that was mailed to dealers on 02/14/2007. If you cannot access the calibration, call the Techline Customer Support Center at 1-800-828-6860 (English) or 1-800-503-3222 (French) and it will be provided.

 

Notice: Before reprogramming, please check the battery condition to prevent a reprogramming error of any of the modules due to battery discharge. Battery voltage must be between 12 and 16 volts during reprogramming. If the vehicle battery is not fully charged, use jumper cables from an additional battery. Be sure to turn off or disable any system that may put a load on the battery, such as automatic headlamps, daytime running lights, interior lights, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system, radio, engine cooling fan, etc. A programming failure or control module damage may occur if battery voltage guidelines are not observed.

 

The ignition switch must be in the proper position. The Tech 2® prompts you to turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. DO NOT change the position of the ignition switch during the programming procedure, unless instructed to do so.

 

Make certain all tool connections are secure, including the following components and circuits:

• The RS-232 communication cable port

• The connection at the data link connector (DLC)

• The voltage supply circuits

 

DO NOT disturb the tool harnesses while programming. If an interruption occurs during the programming procedure, programming failure or control module damage may occur.

 

DO NOT turn OFF the ignition if the programming procedure is interrupted or unsuccessful. Ensure that all control module and DLC connections are secure and the TIS terminal operating software is up to date.

 

Tech 2 Pass-Thru Method for the Body Control Module (BCM)

 

1. Verify that there is a battery charge of 12 to 16 volts. The battery must be able to maintain a charge during programming. Use an additional jump battery if necessary.

• If the vehicle will not start, test and charge the battery. Refer to SI for battery testing and charging information, if required.

• If the battery will not hold a charge, replace the battery. Do NOT replace the battery unless it can’t be charged or a leak and/or physical damage is present.

2. Connect the Tech 2 to the vehicle and the TIS terminal.

3. Turn the ignition to the ON position with the engine OFF.

4. After all warning chimes inside the vehicle have stopped, turn on the Tech 2.

5. On the TIS terminal go into SPS Programming.

6. Select Pass Thru programming.

7. Follow instruction on the TIS terminal. When you get to the Supported Controllers screen.

7.1. Scroll down in the top box and select BCM (Body Control Module).

7.2. In the lower box select Normal.

7.3. Select Next.

 

Important: Vehicles without the Driver Information Center (DIC) and power door locks/windows will have two calibrations from which to choose. A selection is requried before you can select NEXT. Select calibration 25814828. Do not select calibration 25788372.

8. Select NEXT when the calibrations screen displays.

9. Follow on-screen prompts until programming is completed.

10. When programming is complete.

10.1. Turn off Tech 2.

10.2. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.

11. Wait 30 seconds.

12. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position with engine OFF.

13. Turn on the Tech 2.

14. Go into diagnostics and check for DTC codes.

15. Clear all codes.

 

Important: Failure to successfully reprogram the BCM may result in the odometer displaying mileage in metric units instead of English units. To reset the odometer to display mileage in English units, remove the 10 amp fuse from the underhood BEC. Do not reinstall the fuse for 5 minutes.

 

Important: After reprogramming the body control module (BCM) the driver information center (DIC) will display tire pressure values as dashes. Do not perform the Tire Pressure Monitor Reset procedure. The Remote Control Door Lock Receiver (RCDLR) will update the instrument cluster with tire pressure values during the next driving event. The vehicle must reach a speed of 40 km/h (25 mph) in order for the RCDLR to update the display.

My bat on my NNBS died the other morining. I drove it too the dealship after i got it started.. They keeped it over might.. Tested the battery... said that there was no problem.

Why did you go through all the trouble to charge & go to the dealer when a phone call would have gotten a rollback and the dealer couldn't have said no problem. GM would have paid for it.

Does anyone know if this TSB applies to 2008 models also. My Sierra Denali has done the same thing. Dealer had it for 2 days; they said they could not find any problem. Thanks.

Next time it happends they will get a call and come and get it. We had a big snow storm that morining. i did called onstar and they told me 2 1/2 hours before then could come and get my truck.. i was pissed off... so i just bosted it

Same thing happened to me twice, very upset truck has 4000 miles on it and has been back to dealer 5 times, 1st time stibilatrac light,2nd lower seat cushion,3rd 4 wheel drive inoperative happened during snow storm (when I needed it of course),4th and 5th no start dead battery dealer says it has done all tsb's, are they just incompetent? Have had it with truck, This is my first chevy and probably my last,any one have a suggestion

You think other MFR's dont have issues your kidding your self.

Yes, others have issues too, but let's face it. As a result of so many electronic devices being incorporated into these vehicles, and given certain failure rate of each, it seems inevitable that they will be more problematic than simpler vehicles. Mercedes Benz is experiencing a significantly higher rate of claims and repairs, mainly due to electronic modules. Some vehicles are so complicated that they do not even attempt repairs, but replace entire modules, which are priced ridiculously high. I wonder what happens after the warranty expires?

 

I had a '95 Nissan V6 4x4 pickup with a 5 speed manual transmission and a manual transfer case lever. Never had a 4WD system failure in 10 years of ownership. I am not so sure about the electronic transfer case in my present truck. Would I prefer a manual transfer case for its simplicity? Absolutely. I am not too lazy to push the lever.

 

Let's see: tire pressure monitoring, automatic climate control, electronic transfer case, heated seats, heated steering wheel, rainsense wipers, navigation system, DVD player, power sunroof, remote start, electronically controlled auto transmission, are all nice to have but they come at a price. Not just higher purchase price, but lower overall vehicle reliability price.

Well guys it happened again... Go to start the truck this morning with the remote. Nothing.. Battery dead again. Nothing was left on. This time I called road side assistance. Took about 1 hour and they came and boosted the truck.

i've had my 06 sierra for about 4 months now and it has happened to me once when i did not have the truck running for a couple days.

    • I bought belts and pulleys for my '20 L5P at Rock Auto a couple years ago. I have used them for many years, and almost always save significant money, especially when I buy maintenance stuff ahead of time.   They carry many OEM parts, which is all I use unless an aftermarket is shown to be same/superior, or if it is an insignificant part or unavailable OEM part anywhere else. RA is usually lower priced, often by a bunch, but parts are sometimes unavailable or out of stock, and I do shop around and sometimes find better prices at other sites.   Be aware that you pay shipping, and if you buy multiple items and they are coming from different warehouses, the shipping can kill the advantage. Planning ahead is best if possible.   If you have a transmission service in the near future, check out their OEM (AC Delco ULV) fluid, usually MUCH less than anywhere else.
    • New member here, very long time occasional guest. Saw this thread, thought it would be a good time to contribute someting. It is only my experience and not a claim that everyone will have the same.   I bought my '20 3500 L5P new and have put 99.9% (literally) of it's current ~400k miles on it myself, with over 50% of that towing loads between 4k to 15k, and to me this truck has been nothing short of amazing. For the first 235k I had zero issues, and from there until 321k I replaced a NOx sensor, two failing glow plugs, and three of the notorious injector connectors. I believe this truck is in part, a testament to good luck, but also good care and following a decent maintenance schedule (I also keep meticulous records.) As a result, it looks as good as a well cared for 70k rig, up and down, inside and out.   At some point before that 321k mile mark I began to get a little spooked about the 10L1000, especially the valve body. Word of mouth about potential issues prompted me to jump on the net to sift through all the noise and determine what all the fuss was about. I routinely take long trips, coast-to-coast and points in between, so roadside breakdowns can be '...a thousand miles from nowhere' and a bit of a challenge, and though I had no issues, my guard was up and activated.   And then I stumbled across a chance to salvage some parts off a new 2025 that had been wrecked in transport. I grabbed a few wear items (alternator, pulleys, etc.) and on a whim asked what the ten speeder would cost me. It was cheap...really cheap. I knew some changes had been made in the '24+ version 10L and were supposedly not compatible, but I called service/parts at my local Chevy dealer and asked why and they didn't know. A call to a well known aftermarket transmission outfit revealed it was very likely it would be fine, but to them not 100% sure.   Because it was cheap (really cheap) and I was spooked, I took the chance. Had it installed by a local shop and it worked like a champ, shifted just like the original. At it's first service at 37k, I had the shop put in a Next Gen valve body kit, which after some initial hiccups and rough shifts, smoothed out though with somewhat firmer shifting.   All that said, I have a very serious concern about my newer transmission as just two weeks ago it suddenly began to exhibit a strong reluctance to engage forward or reverse. It was a bit past due anyway so I took it in for service. The reason it was sticking was due to 'glitter' in the fluid clogging the filter...not good folks, often indicates a converter giving out. We ended up going ahead with the new filter and fluid, first to see if it would move and shift, and then if so buy me a little time. It did, and I've driven it over a thousand miles and it is shifting smooth, no noises or slipping. Regardless, it looks like a third gearbox is in my future so I can resume taking long trips with some confidence. In the very short term, my curiosity will have me examining the fluid to check how much glitter has reappeared.   An earlier poster had alleged, in the context of 10L100 failures, that it is another example of how we seasoned citizens somehow descend into hysteria, lose control of our senses, and react irrationally after brief encounters with the idiocy of the internet infosphere. Let me say (and I have used and abused said internet since it's infancy) there is no segment of the populace that has a corner on over-reaction to digital garbage. Just as my offering of experience in this arena is purely anecdotal and should not be considered gospel or all-encompassing, I believe it is still worthwhile information to consider, along with other relevant anecdotal experiences about things like complex transmissions, especially when balanced with other sources.   So to answer the original question, yes I got high miles out of my first 10L, trouble free for 321,000. Now I really wonder how much longer it would have went. Did I 'overreact' to the internet ghouls by replacing a 'good' one with a 'bad' one? Maybe. Who knows, the thing might have taken a puke a 100 miles later. So I'll just fix it again, then move on and start thinking about all the other stuff that will eventually wear out. It still has the original brakes (they're at ~60%), original injectors/pump, turbo, water pump, etc....pretty much original everything. Knock on wood.
    • At peak temperature.  They get to cool down and warm up more, especially those with the external cooler.  I have three GMT900s and one of them has over 225K on its original transmission.  Fluid gets changed about every 36K miles, all of it.     It's not the bean counters, it was the government.  They had to meet CAFE standards and other government requirements.   To get around that, we tune them and modify them to our liking.
