Manual Transmissions

Can you still get a manual transmission on any full size GM truck? I have seen some basic equipment work trucks with no options at all, and 4 speed auto is shown as standard equipment. A/C used to be standard on these, now it is optional. But Onstar and XM radio is standard. This makes no sense. Who needs a truck with no A/C and Onstar?

98% of current buyers do not want a manual transmission because of bumper to bumper traffic. Do you want to hold the clutch in for a couple of hours in traffic? Not me.

someone in alaska?

i could have sworn i saw a GMT900 with a manual tranny while i was shopping for mine but just checked on the 'build a' site and didnt see an option to select manual so who knows ...

1990 Chevrolet 1500 4.3 Regular Cab Long Bed AND Standard Manual Transmission.

I have been driving this for 10 years. Love it. I like shifting. And some manual transmissions get better gas mileage.

So there!

But anyway, the new GMT900. Standard transmission may be available on the 2500 - not sure though.

But on the flip side, most young people today don't even know how to operate a rotary telephone.

And besides, how can one talk on the cell phone, eat a McChicken sandwich, smoke a cigarette, and put on makeup with a manual standard transmission? Tell me, please!

It makes perfect since. GM has a nice contract with XM radio. XM allows most or all GM vehicles to have XM capabilities out of the factory, apparently it's standard equipment. It's marketing. It's easier for XM to get customers when thousands of people who buy GM's every week already have XM capabilities with a free subscription or some teaser channels.

As for manuals, no body, or very minimal amounts of customers want them, so why pay lots of people to build them in a plant? No demand = no supply. Labor is expensive.

A/C is optional because it's a money maker. Who doesn't want to have A/C these days? Everyone does, so charge them $900 to have it.

All I asked was a simple question whether or not manual transmissions were still available on new '08 trucks. I do not know where you got the 98% from but I bet there is plenty of people who do prefer a well designed manual transmission over an automatic one.

But, sadly, we are turning into a nation of lard asses, who must constantly eat and drink, and talk on the cell phone, even while driving , and that is more difficult if one has to shift gears and concentrate on driving.

I answered that the 98% of the buyers dont want a manual and if there is a manual transmission available your going to have to go to the very basic truck. Look for your self.

You are probably right, manual may still be optional on a very basic work truck. I was hoping someone would know for sure. I have been toying with the idea of getting a cheap work truck for a daily driver in addition to the truck I have. I would want to maximize my mileage, so that is why I asked about availability of a manual transmission. Oh well, there is always a Colorado compact pickup, and that one does come with a manual for sure.

I'd have taken a manual if they still made em. Of course, the autos are necessary in stop and go traffic. On the other hand, I have 3 gripes about these transmissions:

1) it's quite annoying when the tranny shifts from 2nd to 1st and back again in a matter of 1/2 second from a rolling stop (I know, it wouldn't do this if I stopped completely at all stop signs).

2) do you really need 4000 rpms to get that extra 5 mph when passing on the freeway?

3) the extremely long delay when shifting from drive to reverse while backing up

Oh well, at least the tow/haul mode is an excellent feature.

No manual transmission for the GMT900's.

Thanks Rich. That was the answer I was looking for. I did not mean to turn this thread into a manual vs automatic preference fight.

This probably makes perfect sense from GMs point of view these days:

Manuals = tiny shrinking percentage of potential buyers = money loser?

XM = money comming in from subscriptions

OnStar = money coming in from subscriptions

I love manuals, but soon you will only be able to get them in sports cars in the US

The way it is going, I believe you. It is hard to find even a small economy car with a manual these days.

No manuals yet, they are saying sometime in 2009...maybe.

As a related note - 50% of all XM subscriptions that are actually active - are sitting on a dealers lot.

    • It is possible to add your own 12v outlet to your truck.  Check out this video:   I verified via GM Upfitters that pin 31 is the same on the 1500 trucks.  The wire is GM part number 84779405.   You can get the GM 12v outlet from Amazon  https://www.amazon.com/Genuine-Accessory-Receptacle-25774623-13549530/dp/B0F1H9YRGF EWAY 12 Volt Power Adapter for GM   https://www.amazon.com/EWAY-Chevrolet-Silverado-Cigarette-Ignition/dp/B0915RRW6Q/ref=sr_1_1?   I just haven't figured out a good place to put the 12v outlet in my truck.   Some people are getting USB-C to 12V adapters  https://www.amazon.com/WYMECT-Cigarette-Lighter-Socket-Adapter/dp/B0F87WNQKB/ref=sr_1_1_sspa? Not sure if they provide the correct amperage that a device like a tire inflator would need.
    • Thanks; I looked there a few minutes, and I think I can find something. I really never looked there, as I thought it was stuff like PTO/aftermarket bodies/accessories like snow plows.
    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
