Wuts Ur Specs?

Well guys, few months back finally got around to building my own PC. been wanting to for years(and mentioning it on this site for years). Was gonna stay AMD, as I've had great luck with their products and like the philosophy on tech in the past, but lately they've fallen behind but I wanted a A Quad core then and not have to wait for it. Also their new idea of selling Quad core chips with one bad core as "tri-Core's", makes business sense but doesn't scream "Quailty Control". (they still sell the chip and make money, with a marketing spin of "almost a quad at the price of a Dual core". And their recent buy of ATI dosen't help me being a fan(I'm pretty nVidia loyal, good luck with their stuff also)

This is what I ended up with in late Oct:

Intel Quad Q6600 2.4 GHz 1066 FSB

2GB Crucial Ballistix PC-8500 DDR2(1066)

EVGA SLi ready 680i nVidia chipset motherboard

PNY nVidia GeForce 8500GT 512MB(gonna double that to make it SLi when I can)

I recently bought A

500gb Seagate 3.0GB/s SATA in a black friday deal online to replace my old (Ultra ATA)hard drive I had carried over

all in a new Raidmax Smilodon gaming case(blue lighted with the acrylic side panel). sweet case, can have it all apart in under a min. takes less than 5 to swap any major component. besides MB.

I'm running it's 500 Watt Power supply. I Think I'll have to upgrade that for SLi to 700W or more. not sure(IF I upgrade to dual 8800GTS's down then line I'd need over 900W to be safe).

besides the above listed the only other thing connected is the DVD rom (getting a LightScribe dual layer DVD-RW this month, newegg is having a great sale.)

And when they are readily available, a 2x2GB PC8500 DRR2 kit to upgrade my memory to 6 GB. Maybe. They are saying unless you do hardcore movie or music editing you'll never need more than 4GB on a Vista run system do to its capabilities(getting that next summer). But I'd like to be safe(Vista can only read 8GB of memory max from what I've heard)

That's a solid rig that should last you a few years. Mine I built years ago and has been continually upgraded and is now at the very end of it's life cycle as a gaming/3d animation workstation. I'm still running an AMD xp2600 barton core(2nd cpu), overclocked to hell, 2GB 333 ram(started at 512), currently a nvidia bfg 7800GS(started as radeon 9700pro) - which is the last/most powerful AGP card left. I can still play anything out there, team fortress2 runs great, but crysis runs like total ass. I'm severely cpu limited in that game, as other people with the same vid card can run everything in crysis at medium settings. Been through 4 HDD's as well(only one went out on me). It's time to retire this thing to my wife's comp and build myself a doomsday machine when I get the money.

Nice system. Are you running 32-bit Vista or 64? If it's 32-bit, it has a max memory limitation of 4gb - it just does a better job managing memory than XP. So anything beyond 3 to 4gb is pretty must going to waste on a 32-bit OS. Chipset/graphics also plays a roll in how much memory it will address for the OS as well.

i am due to build another one for myself ... but been trying to decide between working on my truck or my old vw bug ... or spending money on parts for another computer ...

my current one is only 1 year old so i may just wait a bit more...

i am still running XP tho ... don't like vista to much ... plus it is such a memory hog.

I plan to keep some of my components and upgrade the MB, Processor, and Vid Card soon but it is still cruising along pretty well. Not really a gamer so it does what I need it to do. Photoshop and video editing stuff still flies.

I'm running XP 32 bit.

Hmmm, one thing about EVGA.....upgrade offers and the lifetime warranty.

They just sent me an e-mail for an upgrade offer. For 80 bucks I can trade in my few month old 680i for the brand spankin new 780i(which can run 3 way SLi). I paid like 140 for my 680 on sale, the 780i is running 260.....sounds like a deal, my system will last that much longer.....

The offer lasts 60 days,which means it ends several weeks after I'll know how much my tax refund will be.

AMD Athlon 64 - Clawhammer 3000+

-1.5 Gigs of Kingston (yes Kingston) RAM. I know 1.5 gigs is weird, but 1.5 gigs dual channel > 2 gigs non dual channel, and I only had pairs for 1.5.

-250 gig Seagate SATA. Looking to add another go RAID.

-NEC dual layer 16x DVD burner

-Nvidia GeForce 4 MX (I don't game)

-Sound Blaster Audigy 24 bit sound card through Klipsch ProMedia 2.1s (awesome)

-Abit UL8 motherboard.

I wish it was X2 and kinda wish I had the HP w2207 display, but I can't really justify making any changes to my computer when my truck needs a little attention and my computer runs good.
