your prefrence really but i would use the 5w 30 10w 30 is a little thicker and in cold weather does not flow as well. I use amsoil full syn. To each is own...there are tons of threads on here just search for Oil and happy reading

I would not use 10W30. There's a good reason GM spec'd 5W30. I use synthetic. Have since the first oil change. Currently use Mobil 1. But honestly, any good quality brand of oil, dino or syn or blend, as long as it meets the GM spec is going to be fine. Six quarts is the magic number.

Thanks guys. Im sure there is tons of questions like this but just wanted to make sure.

Will synethetic or non synthetic make a difference?

some say yes others say no....synthetic is supposed to give you greater protection, mpg and drain intervals. You can go to sites like moble 1 or amsoil .com and read up on their claims...I like moble 1 and amsoil just a prefrence though.

MottoXXXi,

You are asking some good questions and you will find many varying opions on oil type and brand. I would deffinately agree with the others that 5W 30 is the way to go. I also pesonally use Amsoil full synthetic but IMO you cannot go wrong with Pennzoil, Mobil or other syn. Even regular (dino) oils are so good today that you are certainly not hurting your truck by using a good brand dino oil. If you plan to keep it a long long time, or would like to extend your drain intervals a little, syn is the way to go. However, another member posted a pic and a story of a co-workers 99 Sierre with over 400,000 miles on the original engine and he had been using dino oil since new.

More important than the oil, is your choice of filters. Be sure and choose a good quality filter and avoid economy grade filters. Again, there are many opinions as to which are best and I personally use CARQUEST Premium filters supplied to us by Wix. They also supply NAPA and their Gold series is the same as our Premium filter. Of course you cannot go wrong with an AC filter either.

If you do read or hear from someone that a "cheap filter" is just as good remember this. The low end economy filters cost the mfg well under $1.00 to produce, in some cases WAY under $1.00. Do you really want to install one of these on your new truck?

Supertech filter at 2.67 and an E-core filter to boot. Oil of your choice but make it 5w-30. Whats not to love. :(

If you really want to learn about oil you can look at bobistheoilguy .com. TONS of info. Is synthetic better? Yes. Is it worth the price difference? Up to you. I use Amsoil in just about everything I run, including my air compressor. Amsoil is the only company I've found that tests theier product against others and actually names names. Not brand A and brand B.

This is a hotly contested topic, prepare yourself for many differing opinions.

Good luck.
