Spark Plug Gap

I have a 2006 silvy with the 5.3L engine. Gap recommended to be .040 inches. So, in the past and on LS1engines, I recall gaps of .044 inches up to .060 inches. Can I open up the gap some to help the burn in my truck? What would be the optimum gap to improve idle/burn characteristics of my truck? I am completely stock with only upgraded wires and magnaflow exhaust.

OK, so I went ahead and checked and cleaned my NGK's (copper ones). They have 10k miles on them and are in great shape. Some were not gapped correctly as when I put them in I gapped them to factory specks of .040. I regapped them to .050 to see if there is any difference. I will post later the results to see if the regapping helped smooth out the idle.
