1997 Yukon 4wd

I flip the switch from 2h to 4h while driving (<30mph) and get some noises (squeeking) and serious resistance on my passenger right front... enough to almost pull me off the road. when i switch back into 2h, it does not disengage (i only rolled about a 10th mile)... i put the truck in reverse, back up 10ft and then drive and it is disengaged. i do not believe the previous owner engaged 4wd very much and i did not try to shift into 4l. any suggestions? thanks

the gm owners manual says that i can go from 2h to 4h at any speed and 2h or 4h to 4l at 3mph or less.

4H manual states any driving speed on my 06 Silverado. Not sure if this guy's 97 would be the same. I have shifted into 4x4 at up to 65 on the interstate under bad weather conditions and not had an issue. 4L you can't be rolling more than 3 mph according to manual. I have a manual shift. My father in law always warned me to shift into 4x4 at least once a month to keep things lubricated. Not sure if there is any truth in that. But I end up in 4x4 at least once a month on the farm so it doesn't matter.

Sounds like something is binding up not letting the hub disengage. Maybe the transfer case is not disengaging correctly? Sorry I'm not a mechanic by no means, just throwing ideas.
