Interference Or Non-interference

I have a simple question about the 8.1 Liter V-8 (8100 Vortec, 496) its in my '01 Chevy 2500HD. Is this engine an interference or non-interference. I'm am definitely not going to tear off the heads just to find out. The only reason why i need to know this is for my "engines" class. I've called the GM dealership in my town but I know more about vehicles then the knothead that works there. I think he was sick during engine week.

Probably the reason they are not concerned is that these engines have timeing chains. When was the last time a timeing chain broke.

 

Only cars with rubber timing belts that break are concerned about interference/non-interference.

Probably thinking that cause the valves and the pistons are what interfere when a belt breaks. If the chain would break(better luck winning the lottery), then yes it is technically an interference engine but its not really a problem. In the 80's the nylon cam sprockets were known to loose their teeth and cause valve to piston contact.
