Muffler/heat Shield Pop

As some of you have noticed the muffler/heat shield strap on combo is quite annoying with the constant snap, cracle, and pop.

I too have had this problem. It does it all the time...driving, sitting, stop and go traffic, etc. So took it in for the GM fix on the TSB for this probelm. However, it did nothing! Still amkes the same popping/snapping.

So my question has anyone taken off their heat shield entirely? Can i do this without really any consequences? :flag:

Get it fixed, GM didnt put the shield on for the heck of it.

I agree with redvett... make em fix it.

i thought the gm fix on the tsb was to remove the heat shield if the new straps didn't fix the problem...or am i wrong?

Not sure they replaced my straps it fixed it for all of a week now it back just not as bad as it was before. The ticking doesn't last for 30mins to 40 mins now only 15 or 20.

had the TSB done myself and it still does it - another member on here had the same issue and after they did the TSB they said well there is nothing more we can do for it - we can have you purchase a GM exhaust for it at cost. So I do not know what I am going to do either but it drives me crazy!!!

File a complaint with GM customer service. 800 # is in your owners manual. If there is no solution after 2-3 weeks call back.

Works for me.

smoke? this is the first muffler i have even seen a heat shield...what, do GM mufflers radiate larger than normal amounts of heat?

but let me ask this about the removal....if you go get a Flowmaster or Magnaflow (pretty much any aftermarket muffler) what then? im sure they dont put the GM heat shield back on b/c it would not fit. So does the "muffler shop" just leave it with no heat shield or what?

To me it seems that if an aftermarket muffler has no heat shield why then would the GM need one...unless it radiates so much heat the bed of the truck cannot handle it?

That is an interesting observation. The GM muffler w/shield seemed like a good idea but in the context of replacement mufflers not having them . . . hmmmm.

I cut mine off after I saw the cheap ass straps on it. Have had no problems for 12000 miles. Whys it need a shield anyway? to keep the bed from getting warm??? When I had a dynomax muffler put on they didnt put a heat shield with it.

Ive also heard of people taking those adjustable metal plumbing straps and tightening the shield back down.

another observation...just looked under the truck and noticed there is another heat shield mounted to the underside of the bed any way.......why so many heat shields? :banghead:

I think I am with Brandon here. I looked under mine and there is no way the muffler is gonna generate enough heat to bother anything around it... Hell... there isn't much around it.

Mine is coming off.
