Service Autoride Light. Anyway To Capture The Codes? Clunking Too!

Hey All,

I have a 02 Denali 1500 with the Autoride feature. I have had the "Service Autoride" light on for the past 6 months or so. Sometimes it stays on for weeks, and there are times it doesnt come on at all. I was wondering if there is a way to capture or read the fault codes so that i can get an Idea as to which part(s) are at fault? I also noticed that my rear end is leaning towards the drivers side. The passenger side seems to stay in a higher position than the drivers side. When I start the car, and the pump kicks in, the drivers side rear will raise (I can physically see it raising), but it doesnt look like the passenger side is moving one way or the other. In any event, the rear is never level across.

Issue #2-

I have a bad clunking noise coming from under the front end when I turn my steering wheel the extreme left or right. It sounds like a joint of some sorts, but I cant pin-point the culprit. I also have a wandering front end, and the truck doesnt seem tight at all, steering wise (especially at highway speeds) It actually seems tighter when the suspension is wet (from driving in rain).

Anyone have any assistance or info to provide???

Greatly appreciated..

While the "Service Autoride" light is displayed on your dash, head into the dealer and they will hook up a scanner to your truck and that should tell them the error code and what it means. IIRC, If you turn the truck off the code will disappear so you have to leave it running when it is scanned.

Forgot to mention................

Remember Mr. Dealer will charge you around $100 bucks to hook you up

to the Tech 2 to tell you why you have a service light!

But he will smile wide when he hands you that $pendy estimate..................

Best to stop by your local big box parts store and let them plug in their

FREE handheld scanner and give you any stored codes you may have.

Post the code numbers here and we can tell you what they mean !

$100.00 :P The dealer up here only charges $30.00. You can ask them what they will charge you to do a check before you let them plug in.

Things aren't that cheap in BC, in fact they're downright expensive and I know its hard to believe but I've been down to the dealer to have some codes read on my Sub and they charged me $30.00 to hook up the scanner. The dealer up here charges $105 per hour as well, but it only took them a few minutes to get the error codes. Maybe that's why the price was so cheap. I would imagine if they took an hour to find the problem it would cost $105.00 or maybe they figured if they charge a small amount for the scan they could hose me for the repair. The dealer shouldn't charge an hours labour if the job doesn't take an hour to complete.

Heck.......If the book calls for 1 hour thats what ya pay !

No matter if it takes 5 minutes.

Now, should I assume that there is only one scanner needed to get the codes, and that the port located under the steering wheel is the plug in location? Or are there specific scanners for specific ports located in the truck.

I am heading to Autozone tomorrow for the scanner, but I want to know if there may be a specific scanner that reads the suspension info.

What is the best scanner out there for the buck???

Well, maybe where you are but my dealer, even though the book may state a flat rate, depending on the work, will only charge me the time it takes to do the job. I guess I should be thankful that my dealer is like that.
