Max Weight On Tailgate

I have a 03' 2005 HD. How much weight can I put on the tailgate while loading the bed?

I'll be using ramps and loading a larger 4x4 ATV or mower.

I haven't seen it in writing, but I was told by my dealer that the GMT800 tailgate cables were load rated at 400 lbs for the pair. I was told this when I had the originals replaced under the recall on my 2001.

Maybe somebody in here has a spec on it. Keep in mind this is just what a dealer told me.

I know this isn't an exact answer but I load my 750lb sportsman and me 220lb all the time in my hd without any problems also did this on my 98 z71. I never had a cable break on either truck, I am wondering if you can buy hd cables for the tailgate that have more weight capacity than the factory cables.

I don't think the weak link here are the cables, but the structure of the tailgate itself. It isn't much more than a reinforced chunk of sheetmetal.

When I load heavy stuff via ramps, I simply lift the tailgate off (15-second job) and run the ramps directly to the bed of the truck.

You guys are worrying me, I load a 700 pound snowmobile with 200 pounds of me on it. If

I took the tailgate off the snowmobile would not fit.

The tailgate is definitly the week link. I've bent the tailgates on my last two F250's...nice and neatly though, you can't tell when it's closed. It bends slowly over time. Mine was from loading and unloading my 720lb motorcycle in it.

That being said, you are MUCH less likely to bend it loading snowmobiles and quads into it, then you are with Motorcycles due to the load distribution differences between the two.

If you can tell me what the diameter of the cables are on the tailgate, I can tell you what they will be rated for.

I hauled a 3208 caterpillar engine block in the bed of my dads truck to the rebuilder and back with a block attached to brackets setting right on the tailgate under the front of the engine and never broke a cable - however it did push the center of it down between the top and bottom of the gate on the inside.

The tailgate and cables are rated for 600lbs. I believe the older silverado's with the composite bed were rated for 800. I load my atv's all the time. I have had cables break on two different trucks. If they get a crease in the rubber where it bends for the tailgate to close, you may want to replace them soon.

I notice from my '00 Z71 to my '02 2500HD, the HD has a much heavier duty tailgate.

I have an 2005 2500HD and I haul my Eiger in the bed and the rear wheels are barely on the gate, so therefor no problems yet. On my old 1996 1500 the cables rusted and broke. I learned to strip the black rubber coating off of the cables. Water would run into the cables and stay at the low point of the loop (when closed) and rust through the cables. Once I took the coating off the water had no place to sit.

I have had my snowmobile, four wheeler, engines, transmissions, lawn mowers, etc on my tail gate, and i have yet to have a problem with overloading it and breaking a cable or bending it. My cables are perfect and no dents in my tailgate yet

    • My brother has an Escalade. The warranty has expired so he told his wife to go to the Valvoline quick lube he uses some times. They told her if her car was a 2020 and newer 6.2 engine they wouldn’t touch it. Hers is a 2019, so they did the oil change.
    • The oil filter has NOTHING To do with oil leak. GM sources parts from 1,000's of vendors and as with anything mass produced, flaws are unavoidable.    Putting a larger oil filter will do nothing but satisfy emotions. The OEM filter is designed for the engine and perfectly capable of handling the demands on the engine. Oversize oil filter could result in reduced flow and overall lower oil pressure.
    • You're better read than that Atlas. 😏   British science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke formulated three adages that are known as Clarke's three laws, of which the third law – that "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" – is the best known and most widely cited.   Stribeck and the pivotable Hersey Number isn't voodoo nor snake oil. That part is physics. It's what marketing and bean counters do with it that is snake oil and voodoo.    Stribeck is the relationship between Hersey and the Coefficient of Friction. Within the Hersey Equation if viscosity and viscosity is 'Dependent' on.......heat.......and.......viscosity index or the temperature to viscosity slope.    Specifically Hersey is the viscosity AT THE TEMPERATURE IN THAT LOCATION FOR THAT SLOPE.   Hydrodynamic lubrication exist when the film thickness in the location is 3X the Ra roughness of the surface. This is irrespective of the hardness of the substrate. To obtain that thickness X viscosity is required for Y velocity at Z load. That's a lot of moving parts. It is also impossible to maintain in an ICE but nearly possible with a turbine under constant load.    What does that mean? Error heavy and operate light. Wear is inevitable but the rate of wear and the milage obtainable are a function of prevailing conditions and HABITS. The only penalty is viscous drag and at fractions so low as to be well worth the effort. Double the life, half the manufacturing carbon foot print. Greed is the only impediment.    The materials generated by SwRI are the RESULT not an estimation or a hypothesis.    Don't delude yourself sir, EV's have as many pitfalls as ICE's. We just don't know what they are yet and it will take longer to sort as MARKETING and GREEDY CEO's have had more time to polish the turd they are selling.
    • You can always count on greed to prey on ignorance and stupidity.    Friend bought a 2019 Ford Flex and asked me about using Valvoline R&P 5W30 in it. Told him give the miles on it and the fact it wasn't yet using oil that it was a good plan. He uses a Valvoline quick change shop for his oil service.   First they tell him that isn't the oil the OEM recommends. He told them he didn't care what the OEM thought. Then they floated the, "But it will void your warranty"    His reply was it's a 2019, there is no warranty and informed them their knowledge of the law was lacking.    Then they tell him 'But it will ruin your motor"!.    Mine to ruin he says. Finally they give in and charge him 150% the semi-syn price    Point it the brainwash is so embedded that even the service industry is drunk on their swill. The public is right behind them. Echoing the same lies on every forum and media platform. If the end goal is indeed EV then I'd say that ship is about built.
