New Exhaust For Fred Ii

Recommended Posts

Greetings...

I'm wanting to install a new cat back system on Fred II and I've read a bunch of threads in here about what people like and don't like - BUT - I want to hear from you guys that have these systems for a couple of reasons. I want good sound but I I don't want loud. I don't mind a little rumble but I have long past the age where I think loud is cool.

Good sound, free flow, and moderate volume level is what I am after. Any input?

Thanks in advance guys.

Well... here is a possible wrench in the works. I've seen the Corsa on a 07 Silverado and I wasn't impressed with the rear pipes. Their pipes and bends are completely visible rather than tucked away nicely like some of the others. Is this normal for them? A neighbor has a cat back from SummitRacing (their brand I think) on an F150 4.6 and it sounds good but I realize that is comparing rotton apples to great GM oranges!

Jim,I haven't seen one with the dual "under-rear-bumper" outlet system installed,I didn't know a lot of the piping showed.

I'm voting for CORSA anyway though :D

Oh... I'm not in any way knocking Corsa. I understand they are premium stuff. I might want to go with a custom system as mentioned above. I really like having the pipes tucked up tight against the sides of the receiver hitch and turned down right behind the bumper... completely out of sight!

Thanks guys.

How would a Denali's 6.2L muffler sound with a 5.3L?

There's got to be a good number of them heading for the trash. I'm thinking about doing something different for my 02 5.3, but I like how the stock is very quiet a idle and NO droning at any speed. But a little bit of rumble would be nice.

Flowmaster 50 Series all the way

I love my system. Almost no drone, its barely noticible in the cab, and outside it has a nice healthy and hearty growl and if you really mat on it you can wake up a neighborhood. Perfect exhaust system for my liking. I cant stand a lot of cab noise all the time, but when I get in the mood to mash it i want to make some noise and it does that too.

I have a complete flowmaster system that i got for about 200 shipped to my door, and I got 2 stainless 18 inch 45 degree tips. Tubing lasts, mufflers holding up great, and the stainless is still lookin good.

I too really like the Corsa system. But that certainly doesn't mean it's perfect. I'm picky enough to find something wrong with just about anything! I've had many many exhaust systems on various vehicles over the years. I've never actually been 100% happy with any of them. I've listened to them inside and out, record audio, video, made adjustments, added resonators, etc. Sometimes you think it sounds good, until you put a camera on the outside, and hear what everybody else is hearing.

First, before I get carried away, here are the positive comments regarding the Corsa Sport Cat-Back on my 6.0l...

  • It has produced the least amount of drone of other free-flowing performance exhaust systems I've had (so far).
  • It sounds awesome at WOT while remaining relatively quite at other times.
  • One of the best sounding systems I've heard - in that you actually hear the mean exhaust growl you expect from a V8 - all of the time.
  • Easy installation.
  • Great looking polished tip on the side-exit system
  • Overall, good quality materials and assembly

And now the more "negative" comments, if you will...

  • Tends to sound bit a raspy at the high RPM's. In particular when echoing off other objects you get this high frequency "clattering" sound because of the side-exit system. Which happens quite a lot in my case since I love to floor it! I suspect this is due to the RSC Corsa uses to block out low-end frequency's that cause Drone in the first place.
  • At very low RPM, at or below 1500 or so, there is a strange exhaust resonance echoing towards the front of the vehicle. Only happens at low RPM when providing certain throttle input.
  • The polished tip could be better, mainly with the rear-exit systems. The polished portion of the tips are way too short. Also looks like they gave up on some of the welds on the tip. They just decided they didn't need to weld all the way around or were trying to save time/money?
  • The Sport system still has noticeable drone on the highway. Even more so when you have a load, such as towing, or simply carrying a truck full of cargo/passengers. Never any warning of this on the Corsa website. Just that their systems don't have drone. Which is not 100% true for all applications.
  • It's freakin' expensive!!!

As usual, your results will vary depending on mostly... what engine you have, whether you pick the Touring or Sport, and just how picky you happen to be. :D Obviously, I'm one of those people who notice every little noise, vibration, rattle, clunk, and pop the truck makes. I've gotten used to most of them... but not all!

FYI - At the moment, my Corsa system has been removed as I experiment with other (quieter) systems. I'll update as I have more info!

Hmm that's odd. I don't know about any other Corsa systems, but the dual under bumper Sport one on my truck doesn't have any visible piping (except for where the tips come out).

Can you post or send me a pic up under the rear end of the tubing? If it is as you say I'm interested in it. Thanks!

Ahh.....I see a CORSA in someones future!!! :D

Believe me and all the other guys Jim,You will not be disappointed with a CORSA system.

I would say a Magnaflow in an 18" or 22" case depending on how quite you really want it. Will have the sound of performance, but not be overly loud. It would also be a lot cheaper than a Corsa. Go to youtube and search for the different manufacturers. There are a lot of good clips on there.

My GMPP is the side exit, and it tucks up real nice and tight to the body, and has a very, very nice slash cut welded tip with a bowtie. I attempted to buy Corsa, but it didn't pan out. I am now so happy with my choice. A customer of mind got the Corsa Sport for his '08, and it is a bit loud and raspy for my taste at higher RPM. Again, for my taste, nothing against the quality of this product. My GMPP has a great sound, and I love it. I wish there were more here on this forum that had it and could concur. Good luck with your search, Jim. Zoom in on one of those pics of mine if you want to see the tip. Here is my thread on it, if you want to see the components: http://www.gm-trucks.com/forums/index.php?...hl=GMPP+exhaust
