How closely related is the 4.3L V6 and the 5.3L V8 as far as design?

They are 2 completely different generations from GM. The 4.3 is based on the old 5.7 (350) and the 5.3 is a new generation engine.

How does the 4.8L V8 relate to these two? (old vs. new gen)

4.8 and 5.3 are pretty much identical except for displacement.

Isn't the 5.3 a variant of the 305?

NO.

305 is also an old generation small block like the 350. As was the 283, 327, etc.

4.8, 5.3, 6.0 and 6.2 are new generation engines.

From my understanding the 4.3 V6 is basically the same architecture as the old 5.7 V8, just with two less cylinders. Look at the displacements: 5700/8 = 712.5 cc per cylinder. 4300/6 = 716 cc per cylinder. Ford tried a similar thing awhile back, using the architecture of their 351 V8 to create a V6 and it didn't work out so well.

The 5.3 is completely different. The 4.8 is a destroked and debored version, while the 6.0 and the 6.2 are stroked and bored versions.

Pretty sure the 4.8 and the 5.3 have the same bore. Not 100% positive though.

the 4.8 and the 5.3 are almost identical. the only real difference is the stroke and the top of the pistons from my understanding
