i was wondering which oil i should put in my new 08 5.3, i have ran rotella T in everthing i have ever owned but i was thinking about using the castrol syntec? What r u guys running in ur afm 5.3

Rotella is usually for Diesels and is a little thicker. Castrol Syntec is ok. Mobil 1 is ok as well. People on bobistheoilguy.com are having real good results with Pennzoil Platnum.

If you want a little thicker 30 wt, go to Auto Zone and get Castrol Syntec 0W30 european formul. It will say made in germany on the back. This is a true synthetic and a great oil. This oil is only avaleable at Auto Zone.

Have a good one,

Don

Don't have a 5.3l or AFM but I run Pennzoil Platinum in mine now. Just made the switch a few months ago with 114,000 miles on the clock at that time. I have almost 119,000 now and have no issues at all, 10w 30.

Yup, Pennzoil Platinum! Can't beat it.

Mobil 1 full syn is by far the best oil i have ever used in anything, I just used Rotella T in my LMM Duramax for the first time and it seems to be ok.

For the price and what I have read, you cant beat Mobil 1.

I changed oil at 5000 km's on my 08 and put castrol syntec in. Only have put on 2000 km's since then, but i have not problems thus far, im not expecting to have any problems, and it meets gm standards, so go ahead and put it in if thats what you want to do. One thing i should mention is that right after i bough a couple 4.4 or whatever litre jugs at crappy tire, i noticed at costco they had 1 litre jugs, but it was cheaper to buy 5 litres there then the 4.4 litres elsewhere.

I run Schaffer's Supreme 7000 10w-30 and either a WIX or AC Delco oil filter. Just too darn hot in Texas to run 5w-30.

Wife's Ford Escape with 4cyl gets Motorcraft 5w-20 with Ford filter.

Both vehicles change oil and filter every 5k miles.

i was wandering about the 5w 30, i also live in texas where it gets very hot. But the owners manual sais 5w 30, so should i run 10w, 30 or stick with the owners manual.

AFM lifters are designed to be used with 5W30 oil. It is more important than ever to use the recommended oil weight.

If the AFM lifters need 5w-30 oil then why do the dealerships use bulk 10w-30 dino oil?

The difference between 5w-30 and 10w-30 is the cold pour points wherein 5w-30 would circulate a little faster in extremely cold weather. Also, believe the 5w-30 has come about as manufacturers are trying to figure out ways to increase fuel mileage. Either way...final decision is yours. Dealership where I bought my vehicle uses 10w-30 and service department rep stated 5w-30 is for "up north, not here in Texas."

Suggest go to Bobstheoilguy.com and research and read until your head feels like it's gonna explode on people's view of oils, filters, etc.

Ask 10 people this question and you will get 10 different but correct answers.

I would just go with whichever brand you feel comfortable with. Any certified motor oil (even the cheaper ones) will be fine if you change the oil as your oil life monitor recommends. I wouldn't waste money on more expensive synthetics and such unless you'll be driving uder very harse conditions or going extended lengths of time (>10,000 miles) without changing your oil.

How many miles does everyone here go between changes?

I go by the monitor. Usually around 6000 or 7000 miles.
