Keyless Entry

Alright, well i really want to add keyless entry as one of the first things i do to this truck..

 

it already has power locks so im looking for somethink pretty much plug and play that is simple and cheap, i dont need something that has to have like a 2000 foot range a 200-500 would be fine. so im wondering what would you guys recomend

I can't think of a plug and play kit for the GMT400 but it's fairly easy to find remote locking systems for about $100 installed. The GMT400 is not very sophisticated compared to the 800 and 900 series, so if you wish to tackle this yourself it should be basically a 5 wire hookup in your vehicle to install (+12V constant, +12V switched, Ground, Lock signal wire, unlock signal. The lock/unlock might be the same wire? There's probably some optional wiring that could be done like horn signal and light flash but still easy to do) I'm sure the GMT400 wiring is well documented online, so it shouldn't be difficult to find out which wires to tap into for this install. Check with a few of your local speciality car stereo shops.

I am suprised it didn't have it. Not an SLT? I wonder what the factory unit consists of and if it is possible to add? Both of my '97s and my '98 had it.

If you know a little bit about wiring in vehicles and feel comfortable, I would suggest getting a remote start. then you have keyless entry and remote start. I got mine for about $85 and installed it in 2 days (coulda done it in one, but I'm lazy). The one I have has a few extra buttons you can program to do other things, like turn exterior lights or turn on other add-ons. Look at Black Widow products, they have a lot of things from keyless entry to remote starts to alarms.

My 1993 Silverado had power windows/locks. Car toys for $150 can set you up. 1 hour! I paid $100 years earlier for a kit I installed myself. Never again! 1 remote. Daughter had keys/ONLY remote stolen at same time. Yep, get to car toys. 2 remotes and panic button.

If you get an alarm for a few dollars more (which will include 2 remotes), you'll also get a discount on your insurance. So it'll basically pay for itself in a couple of years, and you'll have a little extra protection against theft. Just a suggestion.
