I Just Got A New Truck - 1986 Gmc K15

Hey everyone,

 

Newbie to the forum and I just bought a 1986 GMC Sierra 1500 4x4. It has a 305, auto trans. Any info you could give me about this truck would be great. The truck doesn't seem to have much power, is that normal for the 305. Any recommendations to get more power? Any info is good for me. I am not against swapping the motor if that's the only way to get more power. Will a 350 crate bolt right up to the trans?

Yea that sounds about right for a 1986, i have a 93 305 and it's decent but no race car or torque monster, the 305 is the smaller of the two small blocks that came in these trucks and was meant as a low output, more fuel economic engine I believe. You can put money and parts into making this engine go, but your money would be better spent on a 350 as there is much more room to play with in that thing (thicker cylinder walls, more power and torque to start with, better flowing heads)

 

in essence the 305 and the 350 are almost identical blocks with different cylinder sizes, so you will have no problem bolting on a 350, I have one sitting in my shed getting ready to go in :-D

305 was a long life engine but never one that won many races. A 350 will bolt right in. The right 350 anyway. Small block Chevy so the world is wide open as far as stuff to do to it for more power... HUGE aftermarket parts availability.

As long as you are going to be buying a 350, why not make it a 383 while it is still out? This is more of a question than a suggestion.
