Need Some Opinions.

Ok, I'm contemplating getting a new truck. I'm either going to get an older silverado, or a new 08 model.

Here's the deal.

If I get an older 06-07, it'll be loaded, an LT3, with all the bells and whistles. It's a proven platform, as it was the last of it kind. They seem to get slightly better gas mileage than the new platform. But the disadvantages would be it'll have 20,000 or so miles on it. so it's technically not new, but in good condition. It'll have some form of of stuff in it. Ie: one I'm looking at appears to have a line-x in it already, while the other has a toolbox.

my other option is an 08 Crew cab LT1 w/ a convienance package, and leather. It's a brand new truck, its the new platform, and a bit different and easier to mod it appears. the cons are, its not going to have all the bells and whisltes, Ie: bose, full power seats, etc.. They seem to get worse gas mileage from my observations, and I check every truck that comes through our dealership.

I'm just not sure what to do, I think the price will be around the same for both of them. I'm just debating on which would be the best way to go.

I'll be adding a brush guard, winch, lights, leveling kit, tires, etc.. on both of them.

Thanks for any opinions and insight!

I had a 99 ext cab and now have the 08 crew. Both were/are excellent trucks. I'm getting at least the same mileage out of the 6.0 Vortec Max that I got on the 5.3 in my 99. The 08 is also quieter and has more creature comforts despite being the same "middle of the road" option package. I'd probably steer you towards a new ride. Also keep in mind that we'll be nearing the end of the 08 production run/model year soon enough, so that might yield you a deal.

You might want to do some reading here about some of the problems owners of the NBS trucks are dealing with before making your decision.....especially the paint issues.

Personally, I would go with the newer vehicle. But, that's just me.

Actually, I would probably get the newest one with the most features I could afford... But, there again, that's just me. I like new, with bells & whistles... And, if I can't get that, I usually try to wait until I can get that. Otherwise, I wind up spending $$ buying the one I CAN afford "right now" and I spend MORE $$, buying the one I really wanted from the beginning, at some later date...

I know these trucks are well built. I know they typically stand up well to hard work. But, I've always been apprehensive about buying used vehicles... (And, yes, again... that's just me. :withstupid: )

Really, though, only you can figure out whether you'd rather have newer with fewer features or older with more features... Good luck with your choice! Let us know what you come up with! :withstupid:

Thanks a ton for the opinions. I've found a few 900s loaded with 30,000-45,000 miles, that just seems like an aweful lot for an 07' truck.

I've also found some 06-07' classic diesels in my price range, all loaded and such. I know diesel would be a bit more expensive to maintain, and fuel than a regular gas burner, but they get better gas mileage and hold their resale value a bit better. If I could get one for the same price as a gas burner with as few or less miles on it, I think I would be a bit crazy not take it. Even though it is of a larger truck length wise than what I was looking at, though I am used to it. I believe my 1500HD is the same length as a standard crew cab 2500. I'm not quite sure yet. Still debating and looking at my options. I'll be doing a 5 year loan on this one, and plan to keep it a while. So diesel may be better for longivity. I appreciate the insight, keep it coming!

I'd rather buy an older truck with all the options you want rather than a new truck that doesn't have them all.

My vote is for the OBS just for the look factor. While the NBS has grown on me some, I still prefer the 800 over the 900.

I couldn't agree with you more.

Many good opinions here. I have had four GMT-800s. They are a proven platform and my 2005 ccsb never let me down or disappointed. I now own a 900. I have no complaints or regrets at all.(beside the linty seats, crosses fingers) I cant say my gas mileage is any worse than my 800. The 900 grew on me harder and harder everyday. Reading this forum, seeing them on the road and staring at them online drove me crazy! My breaking point was when I test drove an LT1 with the factory 20s. Game over. Driving home from the dealership in my 800 was never the same.

My dad always made a good point about used cars on the lot, "there's a reason why its there." It does make sense but doesnt mean every used truck will be the case. Ive been fortunate to be able to buy new. Thats how I'd like to keep it as long as Im able to.

I bought a '99 classic back in 1998. I knew being the last of the run, it would be perfect. I was wrong. I had many issues with it,mostly cosmetic. I regreted it.I thought I would be happy, I wasnt. The 800s hit the lot and i was sold.

Bottomline will be your personal preference. The 900s front end is tougher and sleeker imo. Fresh clean lines. The 800 is a classic model. If you need all the options from the 06 LT3, then that sounds like a good buy. If you dont really need em, Id get the 900 if the price is the same.

I've had two GMT800s (an 01 and an 03) and now I have an 08 GMT900 (all diesels/all top-of-the-line trim level).

Mileage in the 900 is down about 5% from the previous two, but other than that, the 900 is a better truck, better built, better performance, better features, better attention to detail, better fit-and-finish, less road/wind noise, better transmission, better warranty, just plain better.

I've considered the lt3 diesel pretty hard, but I'm going to be absolutely sure of all my options before I take the plunge, I'll be in this truck for the next five years of so, I've had my last truck for the better part of 5 years, and I'll be getting a loan for 5 on this one. With school and gas the way it is now, I'm not wanting to pay anymore than 300 a month on a truck. If I cant get new gas burner the way I want it, I'll probably get a diesel, they'll last forever if maintained. Thanks for all the input, hopefully by the end of next week I'll be sure on what I'm going to do.
