Which Tuner For Me?

Recommended Posts

I don’t know much about tuners other than I will need to retune the for planned mods.so please bear with the uneducated queries. Time is short at the moment so I can’t wait until I have researched the ‘net and forums to educate myself.

I have:

2007 GMC Sierra Classic 2500HD SLT CrewCab Std Box, 8.1L V8 w/Allison 6 speed trans.

The truck is the tow vehicle for our 36 ft 5th Wheel Travel Trailer GVW 15,500# and daily driver.

Existing Mods: Airlift Air Springs 5000# capacity

Planned Mods ( in order of Installation):

1. Replace OE 245/75R16E tires with 265/75R16E (3500HD OE)

2.. Replace OE Air Intake with Volant Powercore CAI,

3. Replace Cat & 02 Sensor with straight pipe ( no emission regulations in Alberta)

& replace OE Exhaust with Cat Back type performance exhaust (make TBD)

4. Replace OE Exhaust manifold with headers (make TBD)

Q1. What tuner will reprogram for:

a. Tire upsize,

b . CAI

c. No Cat & O2 sensor + performance exhaust,

d. Headers

e. Increased HP & torque & MPG for towing 15.5K GVW 5W Travel Trailer w/ 87 Octane.

f. Increased MPG solo w/ 87 Octane

Q2. Will 1.e & 1.f be single program or separate and changeable programs for each?

Q3. Can the reprogramming be carried out in stages to suit the addition of modifications?

Q4. How, exactly, is the reprogramming done?

Q5. What is a “custom tune” as opposed to packaged tuners like Superchips et al and how does it work for future changes?

Thanks

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks

Leave the Cat and O2 sensor in place. There not just there for emmissions. As for a tune, you in Alberta, head down to Westers and get them to do a custom tune for you.

Funny you would suggest that Draenor. A Wester dealer recommended removing the cat & O2 sensor and says Wester can tune for that and get better performance and mpg imrovements than with them in place.

As former competitor in National and International rallies for many years, I know that removing the cat alone improved performance on stock engines and if the Wester tune can compensate for no O2 sensor for fuel management then I have no reason to doubt the dealer. Can you explain why I should?

Thanks

I can....

Because they serve a purpose. :D

I am no "treehugger", but I don't believe in defeating a system that keeps our envronment clean for the sake of a few extra HP that you will never see/need anyway.

Wow, I never thought I'd post in any thread with a topic regarding "tunes" and actually agree with Jeff. :D But I actually do agree 100%.

Unless you have something against trees and clean air, please leave the cats! Unlike cars in the 70's, modern day cats flow pretty darn well and any gains on a mostly stock vehicle would be minimal at best.

I've started tuning with HP Tuners with my son, on his 98 TA 5.7, learned alot from that.

But on my 04 Chevy 4.8, I bought a JET PERFORMANCE, Dynamic Spectrum Tuner. It has been fun...

I had it dyno ,(before and after mods.. cold air, 3" cat back, & more), and have more power than the 5.3  ,

and get better gas mileage!! I would keep all sensors on, too!! They do not hurt HP if tuned right.

This software, can change anything on the ECM, goes on your computer, so you can do it in stages

Be sure and save each time you change something. I started ...stock, stg 1, stg 2, stg 3, etc.

    • How many years have I pointed out every point in that link to the folks here and been avalanched with criticisms and outright hostilities at times? I ran counter to even the great CUSTOMBOSS and Lake Speed Jr and the half dozen experts on YouTube and in the final.....GM, Physics (Stribeck) backs that Grumpy old Bear.    Honestly, I never said a thing engineering hadn't studied silly and laid in concrete during WWII. But I'm old, the information is old and yet, the Laws of Physics are eternal.    Okay there is one exception. I vehemently disagree with their use of the word 'tolerances' when what it meant is "clearance".   The clearance is the distance between two objects. The tolerance is the degree of acceptable variation permitted in that clearance. I.E., piston to bore clearance is 0.004" with a tolerance of +/- .0002" so the clearance is in specification if it lies between 0.0038" and 0.0042". Cutting that 'tolerance in half has ZERO impact on lubrication requirements. Makes for more difficulty in manufacturing.  But a tighter clearance 'MAY'. Depends on finish. Anyway....   It's one of those statements made by people to make themselves look smarter than they are to convince people who are as un-enlighten as they seem to manipulate their behaviors. But hey, the blind leading the blind puts them both in the pit.
    • Out and about yesterday on a long Saturday drive I passed a lot of Shell stations. My preferred, so I pay attention. Lot's of small town Illinois so not six stations in three blocks like the city.    Everyone of them over a radius of say 100 miles had regular at $4.19 but one which was the one closest to home at $4.15. However Premium pricing varied greatly between 85 cents over regular to $1.50 over. I'm not counting the price of the station with the lowest regular so the reference is the same for the remainder and all within the same brand. However the spread discrepancy holds across all brands.     @txab, any thoughts on that?
    • What are your thoughts? The Chevy Blazer relaunch was an epic case of 'lunchbag letdown'. Jeep Wranglers and Ford Broncos stick out like a sore thumb.    The AI photos do not look like a 'retro version', but shrunken Tahoes. Get away from the 'futuristic look'. I've seen two concepts. One had rectangular headlight like a Rivian and the other way to big should include dual round headlights like the early version.   If not this would look OK   At least it has GM styling (albeit the K2XX) A lot of the images floating around look like Bronco IIs or the current Bronco. Looking at the Broncos in my area (central Ontario, it seems to be a mix of 2 doors and 4 doors, 'mall rated' to ones that could go offroad.    I'm sure a AT4 and AT4X RPOs could be outfitted similar to a Rubicon if the braintrust understood the whole offroad scene. Crosing my fingers that if it does see the light that the front air dam/bumper doesn't extend below the center line of the tire...
