Dmv Registration Renewal: Weight Fee?

I just got my Registration Renewal form for my truck last week and was blown away by how much it was. Just a few dollars short of $400! On the list of fees is a Weight Fee of $154...and they have my truck listed as a Commercial Vehicle. Last time I checked, I use my truck for personal transportation and nothing else. Its only a 1500 4x2 for crying out loud!. Yet when I called DMV they tell me that all pickup trucks are considered commercial vehicles and thusly are charged a weight fee...unless I have a camper shell or some other form of enclosure over the bed...as if that makes any difference.

 

But then I found this on the DMV site...

 

 

Which vehicles are NOT affected?

The following commercial motor vehicles are not affected:

  • Pickups, even though a pickup can operate over 10,000 GVW.

and this

 

1. Q - Does the CVRA law affect all truck owners?

A - No. This law does not affect:

  • Pickups, as defined, that weigh under 8,001 lbs. unladen.

My truck is only 5,094 lbs according to DMV's own records on my truck. What the hell?!

 

Does anyone else here have to pay this retarded fee?

Commercial vehicles pay tonnage, you need to get your switched to a personal vehicle on the registration.

 

You can have tonnage added to the reg, if it is to exceed the GVWR stated by the OEM.

 

They screwed up, you should be able to have it fixed. I ran into that on a 3/4 ton when I lived in WA

Thats why I called DMV but they said all open box trucks pay the weight fee, even including El Caminos and Rancheros...

Yeah, I've seen that fee, I also paid that and my registration renewal came out to be 433 dollars but my Suburban registration is cheaper for some reason, that fee is stupid.

Exactly, my parents bought their 07 Avalanche 2 months before I got the Silverado and their reg. renewal had no weight fee.

 

I'm starting to regret buying this thing, now with this, the airbag light problem I've been having almost the entire time I've owned it and my squeaking front brakes . I may start looking at cars again. I'm starting to miss my '00 Monte Carlo...

You should take it to the dealer so they could see what's wrong with it, that's what the warranty is for. With the brakes, maybe it's time for new brakes.

You should take it to the dealer so they could see what's wrong with it, that's what the warranty is for. With the brakes, maybe it's time for new brakes.

 

 

I have taken it to them. 3 times. The first time they couldn't get an error code so they just shrugged it off as a glitch. The second time they said it was a problem with a seat belt latch. They replaced that but they replaced the wrong one and the problem came back. It has come up and then gone away since then, so the next time it pops up it's going back in yet again.

 

As for the brakes...I owned my Monte Carlo for 4 years and only had to replace the brakes after it was 6 years old and had 50k miles on it. Should a truck that is under a year old with only 8k miles on it need new brakes already?

My dads Savanna 3500 Dmax needed brakes all around at 18K and they were as blue as the sky, and they wouldnt even replace them under warranty, and the truck weighs 9800 Lbs every day, and its good for 12,300 GVW

Yeah, just keep taking it to the dealer until they fix the problem. Well it may need brakes, when I had my 2006 Silverado the front brakes and the rear drum brakes needed to be replaced at 18,000 miles, I thought it was way too early. But I had a 2003 Suburban which the brakes lasted 130,000 miles and I never replaced them, at that high mileage the brake pads weren't even worn halfway. I guess it's just how lucky u get with the brakes.

      I can only guess as well that something was clicked on that brought you to the half ton choices by accident. By all means try again and chose the 3500 and sort out that its the cab and box configuration you want and choose four wheel drive ( rather obvious to have a transfer case ) and to make sure the dually isn't chosen. I find or at least did a couple of years ago when I was sifting through the options that it would sometimes jump ahead after choosing the series of truck and in this case 3500 and skip some of the other initial configuration choices and have to watch the heading bar and sometimes back up by choosing the first in the series of option break downs. I think sometimes the computer will remember items that were last chosen and skip over the first part. Anyway go through it all and depending on the trim level chosen and I think the LT is one that may fall into that where the option of having the 4 high auto transfer case can be chosen, where as a High Country doesn't show that option as it just comes with the fancier ( not necessarily better though in terms of potential problems ) transfer case but for sure both transfer case choices are equipped with high and low range in the HD truck segment. Like Newdude said who works at a dealership, its the half tons that are the ones that will come with the single speed unless certain options or trim levels are chosen that add the two speed transfer case but as your looking at an HD, you don't have to worry about that hot mess.    One item that at least didn't show up and not sure if it does yet or not in the HD options on the manufactures pubic website is the upfitter in cab switch option if one is desiring that. Unfortunately its not wired in at the factory but the panel with the switches is on the dash but the wiring harness to be installed gets tossed under the rear seat to be installed by whomever after the fact to complete the installation.

      Yesterday we brought home a 6yr  old Havanese dog from a nearby SPCA.  We've had her for 24 hours and we are delighted with how well she is adjusting to her new home.  It  was a huge decision to adopt a dog at this stage in our lives but we believe we made the right choice!   it was reported that her first 6 years were ones of neglect.  I think she's already realizing her life is going to get a whole lot better...  so is ours!

      No doubt, I definitely agree with you. However, considering the 6.2 and 3.0 have been catastrophically failing with very little miles, I figured I would put trouble free. I’m at 18,4xx and still not a single issue.

      It’s never dry here but it gets hot. My 4 vehicles I keep at home drive an 18 mile loop. One 6 days a week. Two about 3 days each and one once a month. Only one goes on trips about 4 times a year 1000 to 2000 miles each time. One 26 years old gets driven once a month for 22 years. One 14 years old goes 6 days a week. The other two are recent at 2 and 4 years. All are performing normal no extra service other than that would be half of recommended or severe service in the maintenance manual. No extra water or steam out the exhaust or premature plug wear. I would consider an 18 mile loop would be enough. So apparently once a month at 18 miles for 22 years has kept the collector car running well. About 45 minutes a month.
