The subject basically says it all. Are the vortec heads on the 5.7 the same as the heads on the 5.3 vortec engine? If not what is the differences?

Not even close.  The Vortec 5700 out of the old C/K trucks is based on the original small block design.  The Vortec 5.3 in the new GMT-800 trucks (Silverado/Sierra/Tahoe/Yukon/Escalade...) is based on the Generation III design.

However, there is a 5.7 in the new Corvettes and Camaro/Firebirds that is based on the Generation III architecture.  They don't really go under the "Vortec" line.  But the heads from those engines MIGHT be able to work on the new 5.3, but I'm not too sure on that.

The 5.3 heads and LS1 5.7 heads will interchange, but the 5.7 heads have a larger combustion chamber so putting them on your 5.3 would lower your compression. As a matter of fact, guys with the LS1 would search for 5.3 heads to put on their motors for a quick raise in compression. I think both heads flow about the same.
