changed my oil

Like most of you, I change my oil every 3000. I did my second oil change yesterday on my truck ( in sig ). No problems except I had to use my jack on one side of the truck to level / raise it so most of the oil would drain. Here's the weird part:

I check my oil level on a semi regular basis, never shows any oil consumption on the dipstick. I use 5 qts Mobil 1 5w30 and a PureOne filter. After I filled yesterday, the dipstick showed overfilled  ??? ...not worried about that, I haven't taken it for a ride yet. I drained the used oil back into the empty qts and I could only fill 3 1/4 qts!! Where did the other qt 1/2 go? Can it still be in my engine? There was still some in the filter, but not that much.

Anyone have any ideas?

There will of course be SOME oil in the engine, but hardly.

You say you showed over-fill on the dip-stick, thats the way i keep track of my oil, not the "full" line.

So, my guess it that you did use up some oil, which is normal.

As long as your not experiencing the oil consumption that others are reporting :)

I guess I'll have to keep a closer eye on things. I just can't imagine using that much oil, nor leaving it behind in the engine/ drain pan.

Some filters incorporate an anti-drainback valve into the design.  It prevents oil from draining back into the crankcase during engine shutdown and is supposed to eliminate dry starts.

I think the Pure One has this and may be responsible for your misreadings on the dipstick.

Run it and then check it.  You have yet to let the oil circulate through the entire oiling system which includes the filter.  This will drop the fill line down closer to the full line on the dipstick.

I have always checked for leaks and oil level after the change and after running it for a couple minutes. I'm going to check it today, I've got about 65 miles into the oil change now, I'll see if there is any drop in the level.

Thanks
