Amping Stock Speakers?

Recently purchased an 08 Silverado Ext. Cab with the non-Bose stereo system.

The speakers in the truck sound decent, but I was wondering if it would be possible to amp them with say 15-20 RMS more per speaker to get some more sound out of them.

 

Being stock speakers I'm not sure if they could handle the extra power without bottoming out / blowing.

I know they also make adapters to splice into the stock wiring harness for the door speakers, was wondering if this would be the best way to pump extra power to the stock speakers?

 

Also, I know the stock chevy deck does not include a crossover, so I was wondering if this would be a problem for tuning the amp?

 

I would make the switch to an aftermarket deck, but I would rather keep the stock look in the truck, and besides I like the interface.

Stock speakers are made to run on low-power, they aren't going to handle any decent amount of power very well.

Those harnesses only allow you to connect aftermarket speakers to the stock wiring.

Most amps will have adjustable high and low pass crossovers.

 

I think that sound deadening and a proper install (sealed door, mounted to a baffle, etc) is the only practical way you can get better sound from your stock speakers.

honestly the sq isn't the problem.. it just seems like the speakers aren't getting loud enough, especially when I hook up my ipod through the 3.5 connector. After installing my sub I think its going to overpower the speakers.

Since you really cannot amp stock speakers, IMO, I would replace them and just hook an amp to them.

Putting more power to the stock speakers isn't really worth the hassle as they'd probably blow with more power.

 

The problem with your IPod is that it doesn't put out enough of a signal for proper volume which results in a lower than normal volume when playing music through the IPod. How are you connecting your IPod? If you are using an aux plug, then you can get a little inline amp to boost the IPod's signal for normal volumes.

I just bought an 08 non-bose. I tried 3 different MP3 players and wasn't really happy w/ the sound out of any of them, I burned my music on a CD and notice improved SQ and volume.

yea, an ipod isnt as loud when you plug into that 3.5mm headphone jack.

 

thats why i have mine hooked up the RCA plugs on my radio. much clearer, and louder. its a cable with 2 rca plugs on one side and a 3.5mm male end to plug into the ipod. Radioshack has a 8ft one for like $10 which is long enough to route through the dash and put it where you want to in the truck.

The factory units generally have about 8 watts of actual power. Don't pay a lot of attention to those aftermarket head units that claim 40 watts and more per channel. The power they make is pretty clean but their power claims are usually quite overstated. (or rated at peak power) Anything really clean is going to be pre-out and use an external amp. Even that can be done nicely without breaking the bank.
