'08 Silverado - Steering Wheel Not Centered With Driver Seat?

Am I crazy, or does the steering wheel not exactly line up with the driver seat center? I feel like I have to lean slightly to the left to get a straight on view of the wheel/instrument cluster.

The steering wheel does not line up with the center of the seat, at least on the SLT / LTZ versions. I noticed this soon after I bought my 2007 Sierra SLT. I checked several other NBS 2007 SLTs and LTZs and they were all the same. I imagine there was a minor goof up in designing the dash / seat / cab components, and the alignment was off a little. If you don't think about it, you won't mind it.

I own an '85 Mercedes 300D (turbodiesel) and the steering wheel is not centered either and is not adjustable. The placement of the steering wheel was determined by conducting exhaustive ergonomic studies. Apparently a steering wheel perfectly centered relative to the driver's seat is not the most comfortable one for the driver. This is what somebody posted on one of the Mercedes forums.

The funny part is, I cannot get comfortable behind the wheel of this car no matter how hard I try. Go figure.

So I would assume that this is also the case with the 900 series GM trucks.

i noticed this the other day and i was not very happy to see it.

not only is it not centered, it's not flat... it like points towards the driver door at an angle

i find myself trying to bend it back, LOL

I'm glad I 'm not the only one that sees it like that. My Sierra is the same way. :jester:

I also want to just bend it back.

Crazy stuff.

This is done for people that have a right arms shorter than their left.

Mine is the same, never really noticed it until a few months ago. Thought is was an optical illusion until I got the tape measure out.

When I tilt the steering wheel down a couple clicks to a comfortable position in my 08 Silverado the top of the steering wheel blocks the upper portion of the speedometer.

I cannot see past 45MPH. I tried many setting combinations of the power driver seat, seat recliner and tilt wheel but viewing the top of the gauges in a comfortable position is a problem. I noticed the steering wheel is not centered on the gauge cluster between the speedometer and tach but is offset to the left of center. My truck is equipped with the 1LT package.

Why did GM develop two types of instrument clusters for the new full size trucks? The LTZ has a completely different cluster. See quote below from an article about the new Silverado:

"Silverado models are more spacious inside, with increased storage capacity. Spaciousness is enhanced with new, "low and forward" instrument panels. The instrument panel offered as part of the LTZ trim level is five inches lower and farther forward than previous-generation models. The WT, LS and LT trim level features an instrument panel that is 3.5 inches lower and farther forward."

I had no problem viewing all the gauges in my old 1991 Chevrolet Silverado equipped with tilt wheel. I am 5' 10" tall. My wife says I am tall in the torso.

Thanks.

I noticed this as well. It was annoying at first. Around town no a big deal, but on the highway it gets annoying when I have the cruise set and radar detector goes off. I have to tilt my head a little to get see when I am back down to the speed limit.

I noticed this on all the 2007/08 Escalades, Yukons, and Suburbans I test drove. All the steering wheels were off-center in exactly the same way. It was bothersome especially for me being used to sitting in an Subaru STI. Except it was easier to ignore in an Escalade than it was in a Suburban ;).
