Check Oil Level

Hey all,

 

My 2006 Silverado last night started displaying CHECK OIL LEVEL on the DIC. I checked the level a couple times on a flat level surface after having let the oil drain back down and the oil level is perfect. I took the oil fill cap off as well as hand checked the oil plug and filter for tightness. I did a seand founrch last night ad that the sensor for this is on the side of the oil pan. I checked the sensor and it's tight and seems plugged in fine. Any ideas on what it may be? Is my sensor just going bad? I won't be able to take it in to the dealer till next Friday but don't really think I should worry too much till then as I know it's got 6qts of oil and the oil pressure is just a touch over 40psi as always. Would you be overly concerned and rush it in Monday?

 

My guess is the sensor is just going bad and I just hope this isn't how this truck will always be. My crank sensor went bad with 300 miles on the truck and it had to be towed back to the dealer. It's been perfect since though.

 

I've got full synthetic in it now, if they swap the sensor they'll have to drain it all out. I'm guessing they'll just put the Mobil Clean 5000 that came in it stock back in. Any harm in them putting dino oil in since I've been running synthetic since 2000 miles(I've got 22k now)? And will they switch the filter or will they just put the dino oil back in? Let me know what you've experienced with the dealer and something like this under warranty.

It will not hurt to change back and forth between dino and synthetic or mix the two. They sell simi-synthetic that is a mixture of dino and a small amount of synthetic.

Sounds like a bad sensor; it is not unheard of.

 

As far as I know, once you go synthetic, you can't go back. As I'm told (for my motorcycle, and was told the same for the BMW), that it react if seals and gaskets, and going back to dino will increase the chances of burning oil.

 

Take it for what it is worth.

As far as I know, once you go synthetic, you can't go back. As I'm told (for my motorcycle, and was told the same for the BMW), that it react if seals and gaskets, and going back to dino will increase the chances of burning oil.

Well, I'd generally prefer them to only put in full synthetic and have only gone 2k on what I've got in there. I'd be throwing lots of money down the drain if they use dino oil. I reckon it can wait till next Friday since everything checks out alright and it's probably just a bad sensor.

It's a 50/50 chance if the message comes up or not. That leads me to a bad sensor or connecting wire or something. I guess I'll take it in and get her fixed on Friday.

Take in your own oil and tell them to use it. hard part making sure they actually do use it.

I thought about doing as much but I'm unfamiliar with this dealer and have only been to them once before. I bought my truck from a dealer on the south side of Indy but I'm in West Lafayette at school right now. I'm just unsure if my oil will be used or if a service tech just scored on a case of Mobil 1 and a filter. I guess I'll just let them do whatever it is they'll do and see if I can talk them out of synthetic since thats what I've got in it now.

When you check the oil do you wait at least 1/2 hour after shutting engine off on level ground? If not do it and then if the sensor is bad wait until next change and have the sensor replaced.

Yes. I wait a good 20 or 30 minutes and I've checked it when the engine is cold and has sat overnight in my flat level parking lot too. However, waiting till I need an oil change is an ingenious idea and I'm unsure why I never thought of that. My only concern with that idea is that there is something I'm missing somehow with the basic checks and I might damage my truck more by waiting.

Good. As long as you check the oil properly don't worry. The check oil light is only a reminder the oil is low and your OK as to longevity. Prior to 1992 there was no oil level monitor on GM vehicles.
