Tranny Fluid

Well its time for new tranny fluid. I have a question on the best way of having it changed. I talked to my normal service guy and he recommended having it flushed. I called the local GM dealer and they said they drop the pan and do not flush it. Just wondering if you guys know which is the best way to go. Thanks for the help.

I would find out what is involved in the "flush". I have a buddy with a fluid "replacement" machine. Basically you unhook one line and connect the machine in the flow. It holds new fluid in a bladder below where the old fluid fills. Old fluid goes in the machine, puts weight on the bladder of new fluid, new fluid is pumped out and into the motor. There is no actual additional pressure put on the tranny and you have pretty new fluid when you are done.

Seeing as your GM Dealer recommends not to flush I would go with that. I just changed the fluid and filter on mine and did a flush at home by disconnecting the trans cooler line and with helper starting the engine, let the fluid pump out and add new at the same time. I am by means no expert, but you still need a new filter, not just a flush.

This is the preferred method. FORGET THE IDEA OF FLUSHING YOUR TRANSMISSION WITH A MACHINE. Normal transmission maintenance is a good idea. Drop the bottom pan, change the filter and clean everything up and refill the transmission with fresh fluid. Do the cooler line/bucket purge if you are really fastidious about changing all the fluid... but... DO NOT hook your transmission up to a flush machine. "Transmission flush" machines are money makers for the shops and dealerships because they are quick and easy and they can actually charge more money for it under the guise of it being "better" for the transmission... when it is really a detriment. How many trans pro's a have flush machines? I have yet to find one that does.
