sh0ck3r Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 Just bought a new 2008 GMC Sierra SLT 2wd full loaded and only has 3k miles now... Now I am really regretting not getting the 4wd model. My question is, what's the ball park cost of adding 4wd and is it worth it. Keep in mind that if I was convinced to do the conversion, I would also add a lift at the same time, that way I'm not spending double for spindles and extra labor costs. Also, if I am told to just sell it, cut my losses and get a new one, what would be better, a fully loaded 4wd SLT or an AWD Denali? (Don't lash me too hard, I don't know what I was thinking at the time...) Thank you.
2000DV4.8 Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 It'll be cheaper and easier to just trade the truck.
Paul58 Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 I doubt it would be cost effective to add 4WD, not to mention the total loss of the 10 year 100K powertrain warranty! As other's have suggested, bring it back and trade up to a 4X4! Sure you'll loose some money, but will have far less problems in the long run and retain your factory warranty! Besides, what you loose on the trade and what it will cost to do the conversion will probably be a wash anyway... As far as a replacement, that depends on what you're looking for. I'm personally not a big fan of AWD just because it's additional drag at the expense of gas mileage when not being used or needed. If you're looking for the bigger engine and 6 speed tranny, go for the VMAX. I have the SLT and love that trim level. The 5.3L works fine for me, and I get decent gas mileage. So, it really comes down to what you'll be using the truck for on a day to day basis, and what your budget will bear. Good luck!
95Sierra2500 Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 If you bought it recently enough, the dealer may just take it back and give you a 4x4 (plus you giving them a bit more cash), but usually that's only within like 30 days, if the dealer will even do it. You might get lucky though, who knows. If you had a truck that was out of warranty, I'd suggest finding a truck in a junkyard that's been rear-ended, but no point in ditching a 10 year warranty. I wouldn't go with the AWD. It's great for drag launches or toodling around town, but highway mileage will definately suffer. I'd go just regular 4x4.

(Don't lash me too hard, I don't know what I was thinking at the time...) Thank you. When I ordered my truck, I debated this also. I chose the fully loaded Vmax SLT with true 4wd over the AWD Denali. It is a beefier set-up (hence the higher tow ratings, even with less HP). I love the Denali's with the exception of the AWD system (and the cheesy grill ). Pricewise, a fully loaded Vmax SLT 4x4 will only be a couple grand less than a comparably equipped Denali...at least in 2007 that was the case.
sh0ck3r Posted December 1, 2008 Author Posted December 1, 2008 lol I was afraid this was going to be the answer! Thanks for your information and help so far, it is greatly appreciated. Feel free to add move if you wish!
silverbullet2005 Posted December 2, 2008 Posted December 2, 2008 Why not just install a BDS or Fabtech 2WD lift kit? If you don't think you'll use the 4x4 very often then that would probably be your best bet. It will look cool and save you lots of cash. If a 2WD lift kit isn't an option then I'd recommend trading the truck in on a 4WD model. Have you went back to the dealership to see if they would help you switch to a 4WD truck? alot of times they have a window for you to decide if you do/don't like the vehicle. They may be able to help you out, it's worth a shot.

jimmyboy8301 Posted December 4, 2008 Posted December 4, 2008 sell it and buy a 4x4 thats really all you can do
flyin6 Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 Man, what were you thinking??? Just kidding, but I feel your pain. If you plan to off road it any, I wouldn't go AWD Denali. Hey, I'm saying that and I own a Denali! You'll want low range. See if you can find a cool V-Max silvy or Sierra in 4WD!
