Trying To Find-put In G80

Recommended Posts

Posted

I have a 1998 Silverado Z71, 5.7L V8, 4l60e tans, and 3.42 gears.

Im trying to find a G80 limited slip differencial for my truck. I only really need the limited slip part (no gears), but 3.42 gears would be nice.

My question is: what size is my differencial and what should I be looking for when searching?

Thank you

Well #1 the G-80 is and Eaton guv lock-(locker), not a limited slip. Trucks get the locker, cars get the limited slip, with the exception of quadasteer which got a G-86 limited slip. The G-80 locks both wheels together when one wheel spins 100 rpm faster than the other one. And I believe unlocks over 20 miles per hour. The G-80 uses synthetic fluid and does not require a limited slip additive per General Moters.

And I believe you have a 10 bolt 8.6 rear diff.

Have a good one,

Thanks dlstewart01!

OK, so I have a 10 bolt, 8.6 inch rear diff.

If G80 is locking and G86 is limited, what is a Posi? The difference between the 3.

How many splines do I have?

Is a 8.6" basically an 8.5"?

Posi and limited were basically the same thing. Some manufacturers called them limited slip and some called them posi-traction. I believe 8.5 and 8.6 are inter-changable.

I can't remember the # of splines. I'm sure some else knows.

Great article. Put both G80 and G86 to the true test.

Alright, I definitely want to find a G80 locking diff.

Similar question for you: Is my front diff. locking/limited/posi? (have push button 4x4)

Can't have locking diff in front. You would not be able to steer with it engaged. It is not offered by any manufacturer for the front diff.

Now you need to know, G-80s are ok for stock trucks and for general use. If you abuse them, do do-nuts or full power take offs, they will explode on you. Better to get after market if you want to abuse the truck.

Chech out performancetrucks.net. The guys over there are good on hotrodding and especially aftermarket lockers and limited slips. Also they got lots of pictures of blown G-80s.

Would a locking diff help on snow?

No do-nuts on dry pavement, just snow-packed roads.

If you mean hammer-down take-offs from a stop by "full power take offs", never.

Truck only has fun when snow is on the roads.

Does appear to have a 10-bolt pattern.

I can confirm that. I had a 98 Z71 Ext cab with 33's, shorty headers, hypertech programmer, pulleys, K&N, etc. The G80 just gave up and exploded at about 72k miles. Thinking about it now, I really can't say that I blame it. The carrier split around the crossshaft that holds the spider gears.

G80 or not. A 10 bolt can only take so much abuse from a 5200 lb truck.

Nubuilder, your cheapest bet will to go junkyard hunting. Fullsize pickups, blazers, tahoes and suburbans are all possible donor candidates.
