Question On Ride Quality

Lately it seems that the ride quality in my 08 sierra cc has suffered. I don't know if its the tires or if its just a different suspension then I had in my Silverado which had the HD suspension. The sierra just has the basic ones. It feels a lot more bumpy then normal and very up and down. Any input would be appreciated. Both trucks had the 17inch rims with the 245's (yes they are small :thumbs: )

REPLACE THE SHOCKS!

 

A good set of shocks (the OEM ones are crap) will make a load of difference. I know Bilstein has a front shock made specifically for GMT900 trucks.

It was better than it is now? How many miles are on it? Is it 4X4 or Z71?

 

From what I have read, the stock shocks give up quickly and leave a lot to be desired. I am considering purchasing a set of Bilstein's for my 07 CC.

 

Also, have you changed tires from factory? Have you had any work or an oil change done to the truck where they may have added tire pressure?

 

Mine is very sensitive to tire pressure. If I run even a couple extra lbs of air in mine there is a noticeable difference in ride.

I have about 5600 miles on the truck now and I have had a few oil changes. I did have them put the Nitrous in the tire and the psi is about 35 in the back and 34 in the front. I was thinking about replacing the shocks and am going to considering doing that soon along with changing from the factory tires. Already had the tires rotated once and they are wearing considerably with the alignment being fine.

 

Also not a 4x4 or z71

If you have those godawful Americraps, they will wear out in 20,000 miles unless you are a senile grandpa driver. I have found that my truck is very sensitive to tire pressures (as another person mentioned) I'm running 33 all around now and it seems to work well. At 11000 miles my shocks are in bad need of replacement. This has always been a GM characteristic unless you got one of the Bilstein equipped trucks. I've replaces shocks on every GM truck I ever owned.

I don't know what to say about the ride quality tho, mine rides like a Cadillac.

With 5,600 miles your stock Shocks should still be fine. You stated "I did have them put the Nitrous in the tire and the psi is about 35 in the back and 34 in the front". Not sure on how that works or if that might change the ride but I would adjust tire pressure to around 33 psi in all four tires and see what happens? Do you mean Nitrogen in the tire???

Air is 79% N2 by volume "out of the box"....

 

It is more stable in temp extremes though. I set my tire pressure right at 42-45 PSI and last week when it was -10 F, My pressures dropped to 36 PSI and set off my TPMS light, once I got on the freeway for awhile, the pressures rose to 40 PSI and the light went off. I may try having Tires Plus put Nitrogen in for me to see if that will help alleviate this problem since I don't feel like altering my tire pressures every time we get extreme cold. They put nitrogen in my wife's tires when they installed them a couple months ago, but she doesn't have TPMS so I cannot tell how much difference it makes. Also, my tires have far more volume, so it will be more susceptible to varying pressures due to temp variances.

 

This is also why race car drivers use nitrogen since their tires get quite hot and stable tire pressure is quite important for them.

When you work the equations, tire volume drops out of the calc (as it should), as the change in tire pressure is due solely to density changes of the gas in the tire due to gas temperature changes only.

 

As a matter of fact, for air, the relationship turns out to be approx 0.64 psi per 10 degree change in temperature, irregardless of tire size.

 

Thus, if it's 70 out, and your pressure is 30psi, and it drops to 30F overnight, the drop in pressure will be 0.64*4 = 2.56 psi, and your tires will be at approx 27.4psi.

 

N2 density is approx 94% that of air. Thus, this pressure relationship will change slightly for N2 (in fact, 6% less pressure change per 10 deg change in temp) --- so, for N2, 0.6psi drop per 10 deg temp drop. For the example above, your pressure would be 27.6psi in the 30deg morning, instad of 27.4psi (!). Good luck finding a pressure gauge that will tell you THAT difference reliably.

 

There is absolutely NO scientific reason that I can think of that would make N2 stay in the tire better than air would (given that air is 79% N2 anyway).

 

Now, it is possible, for F1 and racing situations, for example, where 100ths of a seconds in performance can mean the difference between a win/loss, that the higher and more precise predictability of the density of a PURE substance (N2), as opposed to the slight uncertainty of air density due to pollutants, geographic location, and other constituents in air, may make a 100th difference in that situation as the computer models could far better predict their vehicle's tire performance than with air.

 

Possibly, in a racing environment, the 6% decrease in pressure change with temperature may make a difference as well, but I can't imagine that.

 

For the average consumer, the N2 thing, I call: :thumbs: and a marketing windfall.....

Pretty sure the multi-million dollar racing teams know a little bit more about it than you do. Not sure why they would be concerned about marketing either. So you can call BS all you want, but you are right, it's only worth $0.02.

 

 

Nitrogen expands at a lower rate than air when heated, that is a fact.
