Flushed Fluids

When I was plowing a few days ago, I was smelling burnt transmission fluid. So I got it flushed out the next day, had the front and rear diff changed too. The diff oil was a nasty black color. I'm gonna start having these fluids changed every year, plowing and pulling a trailer make the truck work more and it is cheap insurance. Even though when I checked the tranny fluid via dip stick and it looked pink and smelled like tranny fluid still, it was decieving. You can smell the fluid gone bad when plowing, and probably when towing alot. It would be wise to change it before recomended.

 

Also going to be going out this morning to the spring shop and have additional leaf springs added to rear. GM used to use 6-7 back in the 80's with there 2500's and even 1500's in some cases. Today they only use 4 with a helper in 2500's and in 1500's. only 2 springs with a helper. I'm gonna most likely go with two additional on each side, so I'll have 6 with a helper. This will most likely rasie rear 1-2", but will be able to handle weight much better. Also ride will be better from what I hear, I prefer my truck to ride like a truck, not a car. GM has been making their HD trucks ride more like a car over the years.

How many miles/hours were on your truck when you had the fluids changed? If you really work your truck then at least an initial change to the diff's is recommended early then they should be good for a while. The transmission really gets worked plowing with all the back and forth in and out of "D" and "R". It doesn't hurt to change the transmission fluid out often either. Preventative insurance.

 

Just was curious as to the miles/hours on the truck because if it is not very many then that doesn't seem right.

I just changed front and rear diff, transfer case, and engine oil, cost me about $105 just for the fluid and an oil filter. (all synthetic)

Cost me $125.00 to flush and change trans, and two diffs. I would have to look at how many hours are on engine, haven't checked in awhile. I think there was like 705 hours when I bought the truck. It had 21,000 miles only at the time in 06, I now have 58,000 miles on it.

 

I got a new additional spring installed today on each side. The OEM springs are 1/4" thick, the new spring is 1/2" thick. I measured 9" between top of tire, to bottom of fender flare when it was stock, now it measures 12" with new spring. I gained 3". The truck sits much higher up now, and the ride is awesome! I took the liberty of picking up another palet of rock salt which weighs over 2000 pds "49 bags of rock salt that weight 50lbs". While in the bed now, the truck sat at 9 3/4 with the palet, so it sits higher with that weight then it did without stock.

 

 

Now I have a real HD truck. With the additional leaf spring, it will handle an extra 2000 lbs. Like I said, the thickness of the new spring is 1/2", GM's stock leafs are 1/4", so this is like adding two of GM's stock springs. The install was $400 cash.
