Hey i'm new to the site, i 17 and take the auto boces program.

I ahve a 2000 silverado 2wd.

my truck is gona be in my shop for a while cause my g80 is missing teeth on its gears.

When i am on a level ice area both wheels spin, but when for example the right one hits a dry arena and the left one tryings to engage it clunks and is ready to go boom.

Soooo..... i am tring to take the rear end out and figure out wat to do.

Should i just get the new gear?? or a new g80?? or a different unit. my auto tech teachers say i should just get a another g8o.

Help

With something like this, it is cost which dictates what I do...

Fix it myself and fix it right. Get factory service manual, proper special tools to do the job (if any needed), and replacement parts. What is the cost of all this? Will I ever need those special tools again?

Replace entire unit, what is the cost of this?

Have a shop do the work. What is the cost of this?

Sometimes the cost to purchase the special tools to do something would make the repair cost 4 times what it would cost to have a shop do the repair, so cheaper to have someone else do the repair.

If I am going to be using those tools many times again in the future, then it would pay for me to buy the tools even though the first repair would be more expensive. It would save money in the long run.

Then another way to look at it is you are young and learning. Might be a good thing to learn how to tear down and rebuild something like this. This will give you additional job skills for the future. I would just advise you get the factory service manual to do the work. (Learn to do it right.)

P.S. For my truck, there is a separate factory manual (1 out of 4 books) which details tearing down and rebuilding things like engine, differential, etc. I don't know about your truck. So be sure to get the correct service manual or the entire set.
