08 Silv Maghytec Diff Cover And Brackets

Ok, my 2008 Silverado 1500 has 2 brackets on the differential, 1 for the rear brake lines and 1 for the parking brake cable housing. To work with the MagHytec cover (10 bolt) they both have to be modified, the parking brake cable bracket moreso than the other, looks like I have to flip it over and cut part off. The brake line bracket won't let go of the stock bolt, maybe with some channel locks or a hammer it will let it go. Plus it needs to be cut down.

 

Anyways, my question is, does anyone have any pictures of how they modified theirs. I have an idea on how I should modify the brackets, but I'd like to get some ideas, I have on more than 1 occasion liked someone else's ideas over my own. I searched Google a little bit but couldn't come up with anything. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I believe yours is the first I've heard of on this forum unfortunately...So you get to be the guinea pig haha...Maybe you should get some spare clips from the dealer before attempting any "modifications".

You don't even want to see how my brake line bracket is set-up. Lets just say zip-ties are involved.... :o(

I don't have a picture. Mine is on a 2005 anyway, but I had to modify the clamp. Its been three years but I seem to remember of making a bracket and just extending the clamp a couple of inches. It just common sense in getting something that will work. :fume:

Guinea pig you say? Well I guess I'll take a swing at it and get my camera ready. Hopefully I can take some decent pictures.

Its actually not bad. My lift came with a new bracket, but I did not want to bend my lines as much as they told me too. I zip tied the stock bracket a little lower on the new bracket so they aren't bent/stretched as much.

If Mag Hy-Tec hasn't changed, it will require about 4 quarts to get oil to the top marks on the dip-stick. Now on my 05 that puts the oil level just a little over the hole were you used to check it. I have heard on here that over filling the diff with oil will cause leaks, the seals will blow out and other crap as well. I called Mag Hy-Tec about this. I spoke with one of their engineers who told me after extensive testing they came to the conclusion that GM specified the oil level too low and would lead to premature failure in heavy use, towing, over heating. They said they designed the Mag Hy-Tec cover to have the oil level higher in the diff. They said this would run cooler and lubricate better.. I choose to listen to them and have been running like this for three years with NO problem what so ever. I tow a camper several times a year.

For the people that gotta be stock, there is a site hole in the cover that will put it at stock level, but they didn't recommend it.

Remember there is a vent tube, so you can't build up too much pressure.

What is a "site hole"? Did you mean a "sight glass" or something like that? Or is it a fill plug?

That hole in the middle of the label has an O-ring on it, there's a small hole at the top next to the fill port which does not have an O-ring. I would have to agree that the hole in the center of the cover is the site hole. Since it has an O-ring it is designed to be taken out and put back in a lot easier than the small hole at the top, whereas the hole at the top would be for a temperature sender which you would pretty much just leave alone.

Those are pretty nice covers, I was considering getting one for mine (as I probably need to change my diff fluid in about 8k miles) but I'm hung up on whether or not I'm gonna try a 14 bolt conversion...

      Question for you Grumpy, why is diesel so much more than gasoline? Seems to me that it may be slightly a little less refined than gas and it doesn't have 10% alcohol which presumably lowers the price of gas

      How many years have I pointed out every point in that link to the folks here and been avalanched with criticisms and outright hostilities at times? I ran counter to even the great CUSTOMBOSS and Lake Speed Jr and the half dozen experts on YouTube and in the final.....GM, Physics (Stribeck) backs that Grumpy old Bear.    Honestly, I never said a thing engineering hadn't studied silly and laid in concrete during WWII. But I'm old, the information is old and yet, the Laws of Physics are eternal.    Okay there is one exception. I vehemently disagree with their use of the word 'tolerances' when what it meant is "clearance".   The clearance is the distance between two objects. The tolerance is the degree of acceptable variation permitted in that clearance. I.E., piston to bore clearance is 0.004" with a tolerance of +/- .0002" so the clearance is in specification if it lies between 0.0038" and 0.0042". Cutting that 'tolerance in half has ZERO impact on lubrication requirements. Makes for more difficulty in manufacturing.  But a tighter clearance 'MAY'. Depends on finish. Anyway....   It's one of those statements made by people to make themselves look smarter than they are to convince people who are as un-enlighten as they seem to manipulate their behaviors. But hey, the blind leading the blind puts them both in the pit.

      Out and about yesterday on a long Saturday drive I passed a lot of Shell stations. My preferred, so I pay attention. Lot's of small town Illinois so not six stations in three blocks like the city.    Everyone of them over a radius of say 100 miles had regular at $4.19 but one which was the one closest to home at $4.15. However Premium pricing varied greatly between 85 cents over regular to $1.50 over. I'm not counting the price of the station with the lowest regular so the reference is the same for the remainder and all within the same brand. However the spread discrepancy holds across all brands.     @txab, any thoughts on that?

      What are your thoughts? The Chevy Blazer relaunch was an epic case of 'lunchbag letdown'. Jeep Wranglers and Ford Broncos stick out like a sore thumb.    The AI photos do not look like a 'retro version', but shrunken Tahoes. Get away from the 'futuristic look'. I've seen two concepts. One had rectangular headlight like a Rivian and the other way too big headlights (similar to a previous non-Wrangler SUV) should include dual round headlights like the early version.   If not this would look OK   At least it has GM styling (albeit the K2XX) A lot of the images floating around look like Bronco IIs or the current Bronco. Looking at the Broncos in my area (central Ontario, it seems to be a mix of 2 doors and 4 doors, 'mall rated' to ones that could go offroad.    I'm sure a AT4 and AT4X RPOs could be outfitted similar to a Rubicon if the braintrust understood the whole offroad scene. Crossing my fingers that if it does see the light that the front air dam/bumper doesn't extend below the center line of the tire...
