It was reported on Jayski's thatstarting in 2002, Helmets and firesuits are Mandatory for the "over-the-wall" pit crew members.

I think it's a good step towards safety, but like Friz said before, I don't want to see Drivers penalized cause one of the crew members didn't wear a helmet.

Any thoughts?

Well, they keep saying it really is a team sport.  In football if someone does something wrong the whole team gets penalized, so there is no difference.  If a guy doesn't want to cost his team a penalty then he'll where the helmet.  IMO If they don't penalize the team, then they're making it llok not so much like a team sport.

I've got a friend that has been pitting for IMSA and CART for over 10 years.  He works for Adrian Fernandez now, he used to hate fueling because he had to wear the helmet and full fire suit, now he doesn't really travel that much, does a lot of fabrication.  I think with all a accidents lately in the pits it makes for a good argument to have as much safety for the pit crew as possible.
