gator63 Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 Wandering if anyone has had a problem with pulling a RV with the 323 rear end gear ratio in a 1500 Sierra Crew Cab?
gator63 Posted March 9, 2009 Author Posted March 9, 2009 What's the weight of the RV? Going over mountains? The weight will approx. 7500, and will not be going into mountains.
DofD Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 With the 3.23 gears I would guess that you've got the 4.8L engine. This combo has a weight limit of 6300lbs in the documentation I can find.
gave20 Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 Good luck with that, I hope it's down hill to your destination.
gator63 Posted March 9, 2009 Author Posted March 9, 2009 Good luck with that, I hope it's down hill to your destination. I have the 5.3 engine, and according to the code in glove box, I have the 3.23 gears.
DofD Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 With the 5.3 and 3.23's, I find a max trailer weight of 6800lbs. Do you have a transmission oil cooler?
Draenor Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 What's the weight of the RV? Going over mountains? The weight will approx. 7500, and will not be going into mountains. Actual weight or Gross weight? What I am getting at is; That you may still be able to tow the trailer, as long you dont load it down.
Zembonez Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 [The weight will approx. 7500, and will not be going into mountains. No offense man, but no way in hell you can tow a 7500 pound RV with 3.23 gears. Even with a cooler, your trans will be toast in short order. WAY too much weight for that configuration. 4600 pounds is MAX capacity according to the GM website with 3.23 gears and a 4.8 V8 (6600 pounds MAX with 3.42 gears and a 5.3 V8) You need a different truck that is designed for towing weight that heavy.

grampadirt Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 To give you an example look below at my sig pic.I have a K2500,454,4:56 gears towing a 7,500lb.(total weight) toy hauler full of dirtbikes.I also have a K1500 'Burb and would in no way tow the toy hauler with it.You need something bigger.
bigbengalbubba Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 No Way, No How. You also have to remember suspension and brakes. It's not all about getting it moving. You also have to keep it on the road and sometimes stop. That truck is not designed to do any of those things with that much weight behind it.
onac255 Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 I would never tow with anything over 3,000lbs with 3.23 again. I once towed a uhaul car trailer with a regular cab dodge dakota 2wd on top of it with my truck that is in my sig from one side of town to another(about 40 miles). I kid you not that I-10 in El Paso is pretty much flat. My truck had a hell of a time towing that thing. I kept it in third and it would shift down to 2nd. the 5.3 needs 3.73 minimum 4.10 preferably to tow anything over 3,000 lbs.
gave20 Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 I can't believe we haven't got the "just keep it in 3rd and keep an eye on your temps., you'll be fine." yet.

'Cause we dont want this guy to ruin his truck, but he can keep it in 3rd and watch the temp skyrocket and then BOOM there goes the tranny.
