What Would You Pay For This Truck?

ok guys, found a used truck, a 1999 chevrolet silverado ex-cab, 4 wheel drive, has the bucket seats, 3rd door, towing package, aluminum wheels, its two tone, blue with gray bottom, has the auto 4wd, don't really know what else is on it. Know here is the problem, I ran a autocheck on it, and the mileage was 99,000 back in 2003, but sometime between then and now, the instrument cluster has been replaced, and the cluster has 60,000 miles on it. So it might have from 160,000 to 200,000 miles. It does have a little rust in the corner of one cab. So how much would you guys pay?

Simple answer...I wouldn't. Unless it was coming from someone I knew. If it had that many miles on the autocheck that long ago, and thats all that showed up, you never know what else might have been done to this vehicle. I can't imagine that you could get anything other than a salvaged title for this vehicle since it is documented to have more miles than it shows. If it were me I would keep looking. JMO.

I'd just keep looking. Too many unknowns, too many other great deals out there to be had right now. IMO.

Same as above...assuming all mechanicals and electronics in working order...$2000, and only if the owner could explain the vehicle's history to my satisfaction. There's too many other trucks out there like this one to worry about it much. Good luck with your search.

Unless you specifically plan to do a rebuild of the drivetrain (motor all the way back to the rear diff.) and suspension, I would just pass on it. It might be just this side of passable now, but you could end up with a real problem on your hands a few months from now.

 

The only exception would be if you plan to buy a nicer truck from a dealer running a push/pull/drag trade-in deal and can buy this truck for less than the amount the dealer would ultimately give you for it. Then it becomes a profitable move, otherwise it's just asking for potential trouble.

Look at it this way...when it was only 4 years old it already had 99,000 miles on it.

Now it is TEN years old.

 

You have no idea when the cluster was replaced.

You have no idea of what the actual mileage is.

If the cluster was replaced the day after it it was registered in 2003, it has an absolute MINIMUM of 160,000 miles on it.

 

Heck...it could have 200,000 or 300,000 on it.

You just don't KNOW and there is no way to find out.

 

As some others have said...two or three grand would be all I would even CONSIDER paying for it, and that is if it looks to be in REAL GOOD shape and drives out REAL GOOD.

 

Otherwise I would pass.

Keep searching. Like everybody else mentioned, there are to many unknowns.

Well, I am going to ask the guy that is selling to find out the mileage it had on it before the instrument cluster replaced. The only way I would be interested if I new how many miles was on it.

There is no way to document it after the fact, so all you would have is his word.

ok, found a different truck with 148,000 miles. Its a 2000 chevy ext cab Z71, never been smoked in has 4 doors, fog lights, 5.3 v-8 and he wants around 6,500. What do you guys think of that deal?

talk my wife into letting me buy a new truck and mine would go up for sale. A little over 80K on my 00. All maintenance records and all.
