Transmission Prob?

Hey I have a 86 chevy truck. It has a 355 with a performer edlebrock intake and a 1406 edlebrock carb. I bought a correction bracket for the throttle and T.V. cable. Had the cable installed and everything. I had a carb spacer on there. and took it off cause it was causeing some problems. Now the transmission shifts normal but gets to a certain point and sounds like it shifts to a really high gear and kinda chuggs. But when i hit the gas it does a soft jerk and acts like it should is this a problem im gunna be takin a road trip with it soon and im just concerned if ill make it.

First off, welcome aboard!

Secondly, it sounds like you may need to adjust your TV cable, due to scrapping the spacer. Personally, I get to know a few of the little carb/tranny/paint store guys local to my office, that way you can just drop in and run things by them. Chances are they say "oh that's such-n-such, let me take a look" and you get out with no expense.

What you describe is probably not anything to worry over. These are pretty good transmissions. They can be electronically "tuned" if it is a real bother.

I highly recommend picking up a repair manual. There's alot of how-to stuff in there, including how to adjust the TV cable.I'm not too good at explaining procedures.. I use Haynes and they're $20-$25 at most auto parts stores....

The TV cable adjustment is critical on the 700R4 (4 Speed automatic) used in 1986. If you have a 3 speed it is just a kickdown cable and not as important.

See this http://www.tvmadeez.com/article/index.php - it will explain how it works and how to adjust. It is pretty easy once you understand it.

The Bowtie overdrives goes through actually putting a pressure gauge on the transmission and checking pressures. The pressure gauge check is probably not necessary but it is absolutely critical that the cable is adjusted according to the factory "set" procedure described in the article. If it is not adjusted properly the result can be a burned up transmission.

I did get a pressure gauge and test the pressure for peace of mind.

Let us know how your adjustment works out.
