Choosing The Right Model (silverado, Sierra - 1500 4x4)

Hello everyone! I'm happy to be a member of this nice forum, full of good info about GM trucks!

 

In a few months, I manage to buy a truck from GM (didn't take any decision yet). I'm pretty sure it is a good truck. I'm a little documented on both trucks that GM have but couldn't decide in between which one is the best. I like the style of the Silverado which seems to be more like a "city truck" if you permit this expression

 

I would like to use it in city environment but also for truck utility (wood transportation, etc).

 

After reading this forum, I noticed there are no real differences between both truck models but things might had changed in 2009. I also would like some advices before buying a truck. I believe a 5'8" utility space is enough for me with extended cab. Since money is involved, I prefer to get experience from experienced people like you I hope to make the right decision at the end.

And there are still no differences between the Silverado and the Sierra. Same trucks, different sheetmetal, but all the essentials are identical.

Not much difference between the two, just some shiny stuff. Both are good quality vehicles, might be a biased opinion, it really just depends on your taste and deal you are able to get. Both trucks have the same powertrains, running gear and company tradition behind them. Good luck on your decision and welcome to GMT.

The Chevy's are made with all of the left over parts from the GMC's.........J/K!

 

They are identical except how they look and the deal you can negotiate.

When I was a kid I remember my father test-driving a GMC Jimmy and realizing there was a Chevy emblem on the steering wheel.

 

Fast forward 5 years - I was working on the assembly line at the Astro/Safari plant in Baltimore. My job was to put the "Safari" or "Astro" emblem on the back door. More than once I screwed that deal up ... if anybody has a 95 Safari with an Astro emblem, or vice versa, please accept my humble apologies ;)

 

Point is - Jimmy/Blazer, Astro/Safari, Sierra/Silverado, etc. etc. etc. - interchangable. Get the one you think is prettiest.

 

And, don't let those Ford guys BS you. GMT900, and *not* F150, is America's best selling truck. It's just that the GMT900 comes in more trim lines. They are called "Chevrolet" and "GMC."

Welcome. Picking the truck all depends on your needs- hauling cargo, people? Are you driving in poor weather where you may need 4 wheel drive?

2008 GMC Sierra 4x4 Regular Cab Long Bed.

 

I purchased mine from a dealer that sells both Chevrolet and GMC.

 

The option codes are the same. The price is the same. It's all a matter of the best deal for what you want.

 

Some like the looks of a Chevrolet some like the looks of a GMC.

I'll echo the GMC/Chevy thoughts above. I bought my Chevy mainly because in Iowa, there are probably 2 or 3 times as many Chevy dealers. Not that that matters too much, but I guess I had more Chevy's to choose from. All the used GMC's were waaaaay above my budget. (So were alot of Chevys )

 

We don't know where you live, as far as the 2WD vs 4WD goes. I got through some pretty gnarly winters in Iowa with my 2WD 1/2 Ton, Regular Cab Short Box truck. Never got stuck, just drove smart. But my 4WD Crew Cab really goes like a summabitch through the snow.

 

I really like the crew cab truck. I can put a lot of stuff in the back seats. Some guys on here bemoan the smaller bed, but you already seem ok with that.

It's like choosing between hitting a home run over the right field wall or the left field wall. Either way you are a winner! Consider which style suits you best and go for it. The 4wd is a decision each has to make for themselves. I plan on keeping this truck for quite a while and having 4wd keeps me from wishing I had it years from now. Also I've ended up needing it unexpectedly a couple of times already.

Thank you all for your answers! I live in a place where winter is strong (Quebec City). I believe a 4x4 will be the best to pass the longgggggggggg winters we have here...

 

I have a question about the rear ratio. What is the best 3.73 or the other one (4.xx)?

 

And also, how can you get the chrome grid in front of the sierra like 2k7gmcsierra has? I don't see this option on the GM website.

My truck came with the 4.10 gears and they are perfect IMHO. I wouldn't buy a truck with less then 3.73's. This truck pulls like a bear. It hauls our loaded car trailer without a whimper and no need for the custom tunes others seem excited about. The grill cover is a cheapo Putco overlay that my wife had the dealer toss in.

Its hard to say what is right for you as far as EC, RC, SB ext. I just got an extended cab, with 6.6 bed. I liked they look and don't really need the CC, and wanted the full bed. If we have kids I may regret not getting the CC, but many people have two kids and an ext. cab and get along just fine.

 

My friend just bought a 09 F150 and wanted a Single Cab Short Box, but they were impossible to find, and the resale would be nada. So he went with a Extended cab, short box. He is single and doesn't haul a lot, so this way he can take more people if he wants, and the shorter bed fits in his garage better and is eaiser to drive in tighter places.

 

Lots to consider I guess.
