To 285/75? Or Not To 285/75?

Hey guys,

 

So I've got a 2000 GMC Sierra. Great truck, running strong. Leveling kit in the front and 2.5" blocks in the back (looks like a stock 2500 in terms of lift). I have a worn out pair of 265/75 r16 tires on the stock aluminum rims now. Running the 3.73 gears.

 

I've decided to upgrade to the new Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac's soon. I have read around a lot on this forum and see that running 285/75 r16 WILL decrease my fuel economy and make towing worse. But they will fit (may have to trim fender).

 

I have heard that going to 285's is like making my gearing go down to 3.43 gears or so, which would suck for towing. I'd say I am towing 10% of the time (2 place snowmobile trailer and a 3,000 lb Ski Nautique), a lot of which is interstate.

 

My question,

 

Will the upgrade to 285's make the fuel economy and towing that much worse than it is now? What do you guys get for gas milage while not towing or when towing with these tires?

 

Or rephrased, is it worth it for my application? Cuz they do look awesome!

I have 285/75 on my 2000 GMC Z71, I haven't tried it with other tires to know the difference but I haven't had any problem pulling a car on a trailer. I get around 14 mpg in the summer with a slightly heavy foot, I have a programmer hooked up so that the speedo reads correctly aswell as the trip/odo. I have the torsion leveling kit and the 1.5 block kit in the rear. I have some more pictures at the bottom of my sig if you wanna see what they look like

I have 295s on mine with just a bit of a torsion crank and Ive only heard them rub once. As far as fuel economy and power, yeah they suffer a bit but its worth the price when it comes to the looks. I had to put my 265s on for the whole winter and I hated it. With the larger tires i have to downshift every once and a while going up hills on the highway but again, worth it. Makes the truck look completely different.

I dont tow, but with my 265s I got about 16-18mpg and with my 295s its not to much lower, I average 15-16mpg, depends how I drive that week, ha, but I got a tune that helps with that a bit.

I towed with 295's and 4.10's which I think would be close, and it towed fine. Mileage was 15-16city and 18-19highway. On my last truck... I used Royal Purple Max ATF in the transmission and saw a solid 1-2 mpg better both intown and highway. Also kept the temps down while towing. I also ran 4.10s and 315's without issue... I towed about 6500 lbs (camping trailer/loaded). With the 315's it left me wanting more gear from time to time, but overall I was pleased.

 

I'd do it again, but the new truck has Dexon VI and RP doesn't have an equal.

Any of you guys running 285s have any trouble with the tires rubbing? My truck is stock height, getting ready to put some 265 MT MTZ's on the stock wheels, but the 285s look good too.

If you look back a few posts you'll see I posted that I have 295s (slighty larger than 285s) and dont have any issues. Stock height though you may even have issues with the 285s.

I have the ford keys in my truck so my front end is about 1.5" higher than stock. Thats just enough to clear the 295s. If you are putting 285s on yours while maintaining stock height you might have a little rubbing on the bumper valence.

What size and offset are your wheels?

What size and offset are your wheels?

They are 17x9. Since I bought them used Im not sure of the offset. Im looking on the 4wheelparts.com website and there are the options of -12mm, 15mm, or 18mm. Not sure really which one they are. For some reason I want to say they are -12.

At stock stance, 285's will rub while turning. I have my torsions bars cranked to give about 1.5" of front end lift to clear my 285's. I also nipped the corners off the front valance and trimmed the plastic piece that covers the window washer bottle on the driver's side.

 

With a new set of tires on, I am getting slight rubbing on the driver's side while turning (full lock) and minor body roll.

 

I should note that I am running 16x8 wheels with -6mm of offset.

 

 

I'm thinking about cranking the t-bars a couple more turns to give a full 2" of lift.

    • I'm not sure if this should be a new topic, let me know if it's out of place. This my first post. Thanks 85077522 - AC Delco GM Genuine Parts Brake Master Cylinders. Anyone else had to replace this brake master cylinder yet. I didn't do any brake work, it looks like new parts and I've had the truck for about 4k miles, 119k total miles.  When it started to throw codes I did the calibrations with a bidirectional scanner and got the codes to clear but they came back so I did the routine; base bleed, automated bleed and final base bleed. All that with Bosch ES16-32N fluid (please look it up). That seemed to fix it but 100ish miles later it failed again so I ran the same process but with a pressure bleeder this time and got the same results, fixed for 100ish miles. The original fluid looked bad and I thought I got most of it out, it could've been the wrong fluid. The codes; P25A2, C05B0-00, C2A1B. I can get them to clear but not for long. The C05B0 indicates a leak in the front circuit (which is bone dry) so I'm thinking of doing the bleed process on that front again today and I don't know if that's taboo to just do the front but at this point it seems like it's worth the try anyway. The new master cylinder/module unit is supposed to get here today. But now I'm pretty much convinced this install is over my head. I've called several shops and some mobile guys that I know but this thing is like radio active material, scary wise. I did get 2 local shops say they should be able to do it, one says he has the SPS2 programing capability. And with the battery disconnected is there supposed to be pedal resistance, mine is to the floor, then if I pump it I can get some resistance. I had a panic stop prior to this issue which may have contributed from what I read. And on the first attempt to bleed and hydraulic test the scanner listed things to look for and one was any gaps between the pad and rotors which I did notice on the RF corner and I removed the outer pad (where the gap was) cleaned it and the hardware and didn't see a gap after that but will re-check it. I read that if pushing the caliper pistons back then you're supposed to open the bleeder so as to not push fluid backwards into the abs module or it will damage it. If that's true then that's also a possibility from the previous owner having the brakes changed before I got it. I'm using an XTool ip500 scanner. Any suggestions, questions and comments welcome. 
    • Next Friday will be my 6 week point from my right knee replacement.  The surgeon says it will be fine if I choose to drive after this checkup.  I know I could drive now but best to do as my surgeon (and my wife) tell me.  Richard compared being 62 to 72.  I remember when I was in my early 60's I was experiencing slow but regular decline in my mobility.  Thanks to good medical support,  i continued to fight the speed and spread of this decline. During my 60's I worked on non-surgical methods and just when I turned 70, my orthopedic surgeon recommended joint replacements.  In a little over a year, I had one shoulder and both knees replaced.  This hasn't been a terribly fun experience, but worth the discomfort as my future mobility health trajectory has reversed.  It is a treat to now be watching my mobility. balance and confidence steadily improve!
