All Gm Plants Closing?!?

DETROIT (AP) -- Two people briefed on the plan say General Motors Corp. will close most of its U.S. factories for up to nine weeks this summer because of slumping sales and growing inventories of unsold vehicles.

The people did not know exactly when the shutdowns would occur, but both say they will include the normal two-week closure in July to change from one model year to the next. Neither person wanted to be identified because workers have not been told of the shutdowns.GM spokesman Chris Lee would not comment other than to say the company notifies employees before making any production cuts public.

GM is living on $13.4 billion in government loans and faces a June 1 deadline to restructure or seek bankruptcy protection.

Not really a good thing . . .

I don't think this is a surprise to many and probably not a bad thing either. This will help eleviate some excess inventory and save on some operating expenses.

That does suck for the workers, but will help the CO as a whole in the end. Although, when my dad gets back from Iraq, he might not have a job with GM anymore...

Will this affect CAMI? We were going to look at the new Equinox, the wifes lease is up in August. If they delay getting those to the lots I'll have to look else where, or buy her car out.

I'm willing to bet the plants building higher demand vehicles and/or new models won't be closing like the rest of them. The new Equinox and SRX, Camaro, and the CTS facilities probably won't close for as long, if at all.

My plant is feeling it all the way down in Texas. We have to idle one of our units that makes a material that goes into polycarbonate due to this. It will be down for the rest of the year.
