Rough Country 5inch Suspension Lift And Align

Recommended Posts

Put a roughcountry 5 inch lift on today and after installing the wheels noticed when the steering wheel is straight the front wheels are cocked outwards in the front. Unbolted the tie rod and shortned by screwing the tierod end as far as it would go up the treads. Still the wheels are cocked slightly when everything is bolted up. Getting an alignement in the morning and hope everything will be straight again. Had to drive it home from my friends where we did the work and it was a very slopy ride due to the alignment

You just need an alignment... Try not to drive it much until you get it aligned.

I am in the process of installing a Rough Country 5" lift kit on my 2007 NBS Sierra Crew cab 4wd. Just to give anyone interested in this kit some information i figured I would write up how well the process is going.

I called Rough Country last week 9 June and placed order via phone to receive a 10% discount. The website and salesman stated the kit would ship same day and arrive on 11 June. I called the next day since I never received an email confirmation and tracking info, only to find that it never shipped since the parts for the knuckle had just come in. That pushed the day back to the 12 June for arrival on my doorstep.

When Friday came, I got the package and went through the entire kit to ensure everything was shipped and sure enough Rough Country forgot to include 6 bolts needed to secure the new axle spacer. I called first thing Saturday morning and the Rough Country sales rep told me they would send them and I should get it on Tuesday (16 June). I had a funny feeling about it but said ok and figured this wouldn't be bad since my tires wouldn't get there till early next week.

Well, I called Tuesday to ask about the shipment (I never was sent a tracking number )and they were unable to find the order for the 6 bolts. He apologized and said they would send them next day air. Well I took a look at the tracking information this morning (17 June) and saw that it was shipped ground and i wouldn't get it until 18 June. The response i got was again an apology and that is was a mistake made by the shipping dept since the order was submitted as Next day air.

Long story short... I asked if I can have the shipping I paid waived due to all these issues and the sales manager said they would refund half the shipping and it should appear on my card in a few days... All in all, whats done is done. 80% complete with the install but everything went together well with a help from a buddy. I would recommend to anyone that is not in a rush to do the kit yourself since its a lot of fun and plus will save you alot. Ill try to get photos once its done. Whew

Im having a problem during the alignment process getting the toe within spec. Has anyone else had this problem on the NBS and 5" RC lift? RC says to cut 1/4" and that wasnt enough.

How difficult is the install? I have installed body lifts to my truck before but never a suspension lift, i would love to save on the labor if its not to hard.

thanks

Its not hard at all if you have someone to help you. I mean you can probably do it yourself, but I would recommend having an extra set of hands and dont plan to have it done the first day. The biggest problem I ran into came with the alignment process. RC said the 1/4" cut to tie rods would be enough for the tie rods, but I guess I dont understand why it wasnt designed to not require cutting of them. I am taking my truck back to the shop after work and that should be the end beside retightening bolts after diving it for a while. Maybe i did it wrong but I had to cut the inner tie rod due to it bottoming out in the outer when trying to get the Toe correct. For some reason the rack isnt symetrical to the vehicle center and appears to be more towards the drivers side requiring a short distance/shorter tie rod.

I'm going to try to get some before the weekend. Just now getting home. Alignment went good. I was actually dead-on by using a tape measure in my drive way to get it. guy said he didn't have to adjust a thing.
