2007 900 Truck 6.0 L Won't Turn Over

Ok, I had posted this a few weeks ago in ask the technician, but never got any valid response.

2 weeks ago I went to the store, cam out and the truck would not turn over. Called the wife, and when she arrived, tried it again, and it cranked fast and started. Up until that point, the dash lights, interiors etc came on bright but it just didn't crank, not even a click.

Today, I washed it up, moved it to the front of our driveway, then washed the wifes van. When I went to start my truck, bright dash lights, but no crank. I can hear the relay in the fuse panel click when I crank, and I could hear what I thought was the solenoid click, but not even trying to crank. Tried it a few more times, but nothing and when I was showing my neighbor, we couldn't even hear the solenoid click.

I have put the battery charger on it just to make sure. Checking the voltage, it looks like the battery is sitting at about 12.3 volts but when I measure positive to a fender bolt it is about 11.3 Volts. Lower than I would expect, but still should crank.

So I will have to get the dealer to tow it in Monday.

Another problem I have had a few times this month is once I get below 1/4 fule tank, which I don't normally do very often. Well 2 time in April I have run out of gas when there should have been lots left.

The second time it ran out on a level section of highway, I looked at the fuel gauge, over 1/8 left and DIC said 132 Km to empty, and as I am looking at it, in neutral gliding on the highway, the low fuel level light comes on and then it jumps down to 64 Km to empty.

Anyone seen these problems? I am sure the dealer is going to love have a look at the fuel issue, I just filled it up so It's going to be a bitch for them to drop the tank if they are changing the fuel level sensor.

Any one else seeing these issues?

I'm pretty sure there are service bulletins on both of your issues for fixes to the problems. The dealership service dept. is your best friend in this case.

Sorry, I don't have a fix, but as an interesting note, I tried to test drive a 08 6.0L when I bought mine that did the same thing on the dealer lot.

Try putting it in NEUTRAL...see if it turns over.

Could be the neutral safety switch.

Yeah I had tried putting it in neutral, drive, turning the steering wheel stepping on the brake, swearing, nothing worked. It didn't start this morning when the tow truck came to pick it up ( luckily).

Stopped by the delaership at the end of the day to pick up a rental. I noticed they had the driveshaft dropped at the rear dif. I looked underneath, not sure what they are doing or if this is something to do with towing it in?

I got a 09 Tahoe as a loaner, and I am kind liking it. it would be nice if you could get on ewith a 6.2 L without jumping to the Denali pkg.

Anyone have a hybrid? comments?

Well I will report back once I hear more from the dealer.

Well got an update from the dealer, they say the power center was burnt out. This is the main fuse and power distribution panel. Said it was burnt out bad. I never smelled any smoke, burning or anything. And all the rest of lighting radio etc still worked, just wouldn't crank.

They have replaced it and now it starts only sometimes.

They have a new starter coming, figures it has a dead spot. I'm not sure how a starter could cause this problem, it's not like I have ever had to crank the engine more than about 2 seconds to start it... ever.

My first inclination would have been the starter solenoid. I wonder if they did something to blow the power center.

Any one else had to have the power center replaced?

For the fuel level problem, they have a new sending unit coming.Sounds like the right solution to me for the run out of gas with 1/8 of tank showing on guage problem.

Thanks

Doug

    • I've installed cheap eBay new aftermarket digitizers before.  They work.  Did a bunch of Cadillac CUE (aka Cadillac's MyLink) for someone years ago.  They all worked fine after the repair.    That number 22740886, that is a component part # for GM.  You can use it to search, but its not something that's obtainable at the dealer level.     So pretty much any of these will work - 2015 Colorado Digitizer for sale | eBay

    • You can install tailpipes that direct the exhaust sideways vs the OEM one that goes straight back. There are several on the market, do you own research. HOWEVER, you need to make sure the Venturi vents are still intact, otherwise it will throw a engine code. There is a sensor somewhere that detects back pressure on the exhaust. And if it doesn't collect the correct metrics, it will throw the truck into limp mode.
    • "Teardown" is complete. Head surfaces are clean and ready, new intake is prepped and ready. Coolant drained and water pump is removed, radiator is removed, new hoses and pump are ready.   The replacement intake is also from a '95 (with I think 260k, the odometer said). Noticeably less pitting where it covers the rear coolant passages. I'm not sure if that's a tribute to more frequent use, more frequent coolant changes/upkeep, or if the intake was machined at some point. But it appears I found a good one.   My coolant hoses were original, and the lower hose still retained the factory spring inside. It's not really rusty, but it's got deposits all over it. Unsure if I should re-install it (will thoroughly clean it first). Someone said hose technology has gotten better since 1995 (has it?) and I don't need the spring. I think modern EPDM is what made those hoses last from 1995-2026, so it's a question of how much suction can the water pump really pull, and will it collapse the hose without a spring?   I'm stopped and waiting for parts, however.   When I first brought the truck home, the fan was intermittently hitting the radiator shroud. I could see someone had monkeyed with the shroud (put a bunch of cardboard as a spacer between the upper/lower shroud halves. Someone said the motor mounts have likely failed and the engine has sagged. I wasn't sure I believed that. The engine is really solid in its mounts: To remove the old intake I *just* nearly permanently welded to the heads with freshly cured RTV and gasket snot two weeks ago, I literally had to use the arms on my lift and a chain with a bolt attached to the intake to pull it loose. It almost picked the front of the truck off the ground before ....scuuuuuuuuuuup.... I could actually hear the gaskets tearing and it broke loose and the whole truck settled back down. Motor barely moved.   SO, those parts I'm waiting on... The lower radiator mounts/bushings had completely failed. The radiator needs to be insulated from the rad support, and the bushings help the rad stand at the correct height. The plastic "baffle" was also destroyed at some point. Someone had attached the shroud to it incorrectly, overlapping a joint that should have been underlapped, creating another suspect issue potentially causing things to hit the fan. Broken tabs, side is busted off, and it's perma-formed/bent where it was jimmied incorrectly.   The baffle? Unobtainum. Long since discontinued from GM, of course. Aftermarket/capa/chinese? Also unobtanium. In GM's infinite wisdom, it appears there are at least two different variations whether the Blazer is 2 or 4 door, and I can't yet tell if they shared the same part with the S-pickups. Plan B, if I can't find a viable used one, will be to create a bracket to re-assemble the critical joint I need to seal a gap with the shroud. But that will bug me, it won't be...perfect.   The water pump bolts appear to have been installed with...plumber's putty. I guess, sure, if it works...? I've found a few "backyard fixes" like that. Someone's been here before....   If I can't find someone to jam bamboo under my fingernails to fill my free time this week I think I'll install the driver's power window motor and replace the rear door speaker that's inop. I've got a genuine GM "9.5" ohm working replacement. Why GM used a non-standard resistance....nevermind. Of course they did, you can get more sound from a cheap factory amp that way.   And the saga goes on...
