Rebuild Or Crate Motor

Recommended Posts

Have a 1989 Chev K1500 with a 350, 164,000 miles. Motor has a knock starting and when under strain.

So got a price to rebuild it $3300. could go higher if it needs a dist. Or should get a crate motor, does GM still rebuild the 350, don't want a performance 383. I heard GM now does the create motors in Mexico. Or is there another company that does that in USA. What are your ideas on this.

I was looking at that crate motor when mine needed rebuilding late last year. You can buy them from the local dealership too. I even asked if they could drop it off at the shop of my choice and they said yep, if it wasn't too far away. Now of course the cost to swap parts and install was $1000.... That puts you right where you would be having the shop do the rebuild. Are they offering upgrades and warranty to go with the rebuild? FWIW, the distributor is about $130 and yes, you should get a new one of those.

Will call GM find out about warranty. Guess I could still use my employee discount before they take that benefit away from us. Think the local rebuilder has a 1 yr warranty.
