GUN-SHY! WEAPON SEIZURES DROP 13%

 

The number of guns taken off city streets plummeted 13 percent last year, new numbers obtained by The Post show.

 

Firearms recovered from crime scenes dropped from 5,913 in 2007 to 5,129 in 2008, according to preliminary figures from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Ex- plosives.

 

The majority of guns confiscated in the city were traced to such other East Coast states as Virginia and Pennsylvania, which have more lenient firearm laws. More than 1,000 were taken from suspects younger than 21.

 

"New York City's strategy of tough enforcement by the police combined with strict new gun laws and innovative lawsuits to hold gun dealers accountable is paying off," Mayor Bloomberg said.

 

The number of homicides, however, increased by about 4 percent last year, with 516 in 2008 compared to 496 in 2007. But the number of people shot to death dropped from 347 in 2007 to 292 in that period.

 

The homicide increase –– after the lowest count in decades –– was largely due to a sudden spike in knife killings, which skyrocketed by 50 percent last year, from 83 in 2007 to 125 in 2008.

 

Most of the weapons seized last year were handguns, with pistol revolvers, rifles and shotguns rounding out the list of the top 10 weapons recovered.
