A/c Problem.. It Works But Not Much. Please Help

First off, I'm still new to this forum, so if this is in the wrong section I apologize. I also searched on here, but I couldn't find a like issue that I'm having.

I just purchased my 2005 GMC Sierra SLE crew cab. 2wd, about 40k miles. Its the 5.3L with an auto.

The A/C works.. but it doesn't blow any air at idle and when im driving it only blows like its on level 1. Whether its on level 1 or 5 it works the same. Its cold, but hardly any air is coming out.

From my experience, I've only dealt with A/C that didn't work at all like in my S10, but this is new to me. If anyone has advice or possible causes please list them. I know i'll eventually have to take it somewhere to get it fixed, but of course shops are going to say its something very expensive when it might not be.

Thanks,

Cody

I don't think it's a compressor problem. And the air that it does blow is really cold, so I dont think it's the "free-on".

I'm lost

Thanks in advance for any help,

Cody

Have you checked the fan speed resistor to see if it's fried?

I don't know what that is honestly, sorry, I feel dumb. Where should I look for this? I'll look it up in the truck's manual tomorrow

Well don't feel dumb....that's what we're here for. Do a search for the resistor and you'll find many post concerning those burning out and causing fan speed issues. I do believe they even have a "how to replace" somewhere on the site.

Mine is located right next to the blower motor under the passenger side dash. Not sure with an 05 tho.

I'm going to have to take it to get it looked at.

It kicked on today and works on level 1 and level 2, any higher and it stops blowing. so it sounds like something simple, the blower does work though.

I guess any GM dealer should be able to take a look at it. ive been screwed over with A/C problems at local mechanic shops with my S10.

That is 100 percent a fan resistor replacement job. Just do a search for blower motor resistor or fan motor resistor for simple instructions. It's like a 40 buck part and 20 minutes of work. There is no reason to go to the dealer for this.

ok great. Does it depend just on the year of my truck? or is it more advanced? there seems to be a ton of part numbers for this resistor

I just had this problem on the wife's Envoy (blower resistor), AutoZone doesn't sell a replacement but O'Reilly's does, about $30 for the part.

i see you have an 06 sierra crew, do you think we have the same part number? if so do you remember what it is? i dont have an Oreilly's by me.

Just go to your local auto parts store and tell them you want a blower motor resistor. They should find it in their computer for you. Or you could look at the online storefronts first (but sometimes they don't list everything). I just looked on CSK autoparts and found 2005 blower motor resistor (under switches) for 35-40 bucks.

I just got back from O'Reillys, they didn't have the part for the Digital/Auto HVAC, the one they had was for the non-digital/auto. I called & my stealership wants $140, but found it online @ Amazon (which they're getting it from AC-Direct.com for $55.86). The AC-Delco Part # is 15-80567 & GM Part # 89018778 - keep in mind these part numbers are for a '05 Envoy, but I think they apply to your try too, call your parts department @ your stealership to verify.

This is actually for the blower module, not the resistor. The module is what you want. I think some people inter-change the term "resistor" & "module".

If you have the non-digital/auto display for HVAC then your part is about $30-40 at O'Reillys, but if you have digital it's gonna be more expensive & you cannot get it at either O'Reillys or AutoZone. They have different connectors.

What you need to do is call your GM dealer w/ your VIN and ask for the correct part after you've troubleshot it first. I mentioned the resistor a week and a half ago yet you're still here asking for advice. Call it what you want but resistor/module (unit that is filled w/ resistors) is the most probable cause of your troubles. It's quite possible you'll need a new electrical plug as well. You might also sweet talk MS3Dale into researching it for you by sending him a PM. Now get off the computer and get busy! :fume:
