Best All Terrain Tires To Get?

Recommended Posts

The truck has no locker on the rear, and is a 2wd, but I use it for work, and pull a trailer constantly. Need to get all terrain tires (but not dedicated mud tires), to allow me to not get stuck in the wet yards that i constantly end up in, including my own. Anyone have a recommendation as to what specific all terrain tires perform halfway decent off road, without costing a million?

235/85/16 size, load range E

currently have sport king a/t tires on the rear, they are almost bald and still surprisingly decent in soft wet ground, and have maxxis mudders on the front, but all 4 tires are old to the point of being unsafe....looking for a recommendation for a decent all terrain tire with emphasis on off road traction and snow traction

We always had good luck w/ the bfg all terrains on our older trucks...

I just got a set of 295/70R17 Nitto Terra Grapplers for my 2500, they look nice, can't wait to get 'em on and see how they perform.

Thanks for the advice...are you talking about the BFG "All-Terrain T/A KO", whatever that means lol...I've seen those on tirerack.com etc...they look aggressive enough to be decent off road, and being an "A/T" tire, they may be halfway ok on-road...?

I haven't had much experience with all terrain tires, and really never considered them until I saw the huge difference they made on this truck, they were on it when I bought it. Now, I'll never go back. Tired of getting stuck in my own yard. That's enough to really piss you off when you're running late for work lol.

I bought a set of BFG A/T KO LT285/75 16E for my 2500 this past january and i love them!! With a little bit of weight in the bed i was plowing 6" of snow in 2 wheel drive and in the mud i went through some deep mud in 2 wheel drive that my friend in his 06 F350 needed 4x4 with his new cooper all terrains!!! They are also quiet on the road and highway also. I have tried other all terrain tires and there was no comparison!!!

Awesome, that sounds encouraging...strongly considering those, although I'm seeing some lower prices on some others, which are tempting...? Goodyear Wrangler Dura-Trac looks very agressive and 532 for the set at tire rack, and the General Grabber AT 2 is 438 for the set at tire rack, whereas the BFG A/T KO is 556 for the set..choices, choices, choices, ugh! lol

Anyone have any experience with the General Grabber AT 2, or the Goodyear Wrangler Dura-Trac? Seeing some good prices at tirerack.com on those 2 and from the pictures they appear pretty aggressive, but...I know once you put em on there, they're on till they wear out...

BFG A/T KOs or Toyo Open Country A/Ts, they're both equally awesome, long lasting when properly rotated, great performing variety of sizes.

Its A/T KO, and KO means 'Key ON-Off Road'

With the BFGs, have you noticed decent traction in say...a water saturated yard? Only reason I ask is, some review I read said they weren't good in clay mud, and if you spit on them they get stuck, the tread fills up with mud quickly, blah blah blah....online reviews like that don't count as fact, but just curious if you've had good luck with them in simliar to "way too wet yard" conditions...that's most of what I need them for, besides highway...

Ok, this may narrow it down for me...does anyone have any experience with the Sport King A/T and the BFG A/T KO maybe? I currently have the Sport Kings on the rear, and know exactly how they perform in the different conditions...??

Whether it is true or not, a tire guy told me Sport King tires are a BFG tire made with Michelin rubber.

I ran Michelin M/S's on my truck and loved them, but they sucked in snow. For the ride, wear and paved roads, you couldn't ask for a better tire. I got just shy of 60k off of them and could of got more out of them. But figured the time was right to get a new set. I was looking at a more aggressive tire for winter and was all set for a set of BFG T/A KO's until I did some more research and called the tire dealer. When he said that he would sell me a set of Michelin AT2's for the same price as the T/A's, I said sold. I've had them on for a week tomorrow and very happy with my choice. Hate throwing out another option as Michelin makes Goodrich tires, but IMO you can't go with either one.

I am running the Sport kings, I have some friends that swear on the BF's, I go through the same stuff they do and have spent way less $$. I think I have the D rated not the E on my 2500 hd now, don't go with the lite truck Sport Kings, I had them on my 98' K1500 4x4, did not like them. If your dirving in these conditions, why haven't you gotten a 4x4. Check your local small tire shops on there pricing instead of the .com's. I have found here in MN that our local shops are very close if not cheaper than the .com's and they do the mounting and most of the time free rotation. It's the local brick and mortar shops that need your help and money in this day and time, not the .com's.

Wow you got a price for $536 for the BFG's!! I paid $1052 for mine but i got load range E which were more but I also had them mounted and balanced. IMO ive had these tires for about 5 months and i have purposely gone through every kinda terrain there is here in New England and they haven't failed me yet. Oh yea and i also went four wheelin and climbed this big steep hill that i couldnt make it half way up with my old wrangler AT's
