Getting Passenger Plates On A 2500 In Ny

Recommended Posts

Posted

Hi, I have a 2500HD and have already gotten a ticket in NYC for having a commercial vehicle without the lettering on the door.

My truck is not registered to a business and is not really for business use, so it is silly to have my name and address on the doors of the truck, but I will continue getting $115 tickets every time I park in the city if I don't. you can still get a ticket if you have it on a magnet so that is not a viable solution, unfortunately.

I know people and have seen people with trucks heavier and bigger than mine that are registered with passenger plates so I'm just wondering if there's a trick to making the swap or some proof of something required or something to make sure you don't mention when trying to make the swap.

Anyone with experience in this who can offer a little advice would really be appreciated.

JER........................In NY you can get passenger plates for any pickup truck only if

it weighs 4900 lbs. or under.

I found all this out when I brought my Fla. bought/registered truck to NY and

re-registered it here!

Dry shipping weight of a gmt-900 2500 x-cab 4x4 is around 5400 lbs. so I guess

your outta luck.

I do know NY suggests that the dealer add at least 1000 lbs. for registration purposes

when new (state min. is 500 lbs.) for cargo you MAY carry! The dumb dealer I got

my truck from registered my 07 as weighing 9500 lbs. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It took me MONTHS and a few trips to a certified scale and the DMV plus piles of paperwork

to get my truck weight changed to 5900 lbs. (dry weight 5389 plus the 500 lb min. weight

plus 11 lbs. for a total of 5900). The price for my 2 year plates dropped $95 bucks

because of the 3600 lb. difference !

As far as your truck getting tagged and fined in NYC for not having the ICC/Fed/DOT numbers

on the side because you have commercial plates my bud went thru the same deal when he

worked construction in NYC. I also know you can't use a magnetic sign to affix them either

(as you know cuz they have to be perminently affixed).

SOLUTION: He just copied somebody elses ICC/FED/DOT numbers and used temp stick

on numbers and put them on the side of his truck while he worked in NYC !

NO more tickets!

Not to mention so he wouldn't have any problems with the DOT/Feds/etc. while on the

road traveling he just covered the numbers with masking tape after he left the city.

Slick huh?

Thanks, it looks like the weight is now 5500 pounds, but my title says 5840 or something, so that doesn't help me. the only out i may have is to say that the truck has a cap and camping equipment in the bed. I might give it a try, because i definitely don't want to have the stickers on the truck, especially because it would have to have my full name right on the door, because it has to be the name and address of the registrant.

Speaking of out of state transfers, I asked my friend, who has a diesel dually, so definitely way heavier than mine, and he said that it had been previously registered in New Hampshire as passenger so he just transferred it over as passenger and didn't have any problems.

This is a crazy suggestion, but maybe you could sell it to a friend out of state for $1, he could register it as a passenger vehicle, get plates and everything. Then he could sell it back to you for $1 and then you could reregister it. I don't know how you could do it otherwise with being over the weight limit. It would probably be a lot of work to do it the way I suggested, though I don't know.

I had the same problem with the DMV.

I bought my truck to use with a slide-in truck camper. When I went to register it, the clerk started to hand me Comm plates. I asked to speak to a supervisor, and she told me, the only way I could get pass plates, was to permanently mount the camper in the bed of the truck.

And, it had to have a stove, refrig, etc. They would have to inspect it. And, if I took it off, and got stopped, there would be a LARGE FINE!

I took the Comm plates. No way out of it!!!!!

Wow, I thought Ontario was bad.

I have commercial plates on my 3500HD, but since it's for personal use. I must still have a yearly inspection of the vehicle (the MTO will place a yellow sticker on the driver's side corner of the windshield or door window). Without that sticker, I can be fined.

But as the vehicle is personal use, ie, it's not registered to a company, I'm exempt from having to keep a driver's log.

I can tow my RV without any issue, however, if I want to tow any other type of trailer (including tiny utility trailers), those trailers also have to be inspected. (weird).

Well, First off, I did it.

Second off, SingleAction, you didn't mention if you are in NY or not, so I just would like you to clarify that so we all know how applicable your experience is to this situation.

I will say that the sell for a dollar, buy back for a dollar would not work. In NY you will be taxed on the blue book (or black book, or something) value of the car if the agent deems the sale price to be too low.

In NY if a pickup is over 5500 pounds (weight on the title) then it must be registered as commercial.

UNLESS you have "permanently installed camping equipment" It also goes on to state that "The DMV cannot examine your vehicle to determine the correct registration class. You must determine the correct registration class for your vehicle."

I have determined that correct class for my truck is passenger and have registered as such, I may have slightly stretched the truth but I am now registered the same as truck that is only a few hundred pounds lighter would be able to. Basically I just had to file a change of class form (which is part of the registration form) http://www.nysdmv.com/forms/mv82.pdf

You go section 6 and in number 4 you write something along the lines of "permanent enclosed bed cover, sleeping accommodations inside" and as long as you get a good person at the counter they will take your old plates, give you new plates and a new sticker, charge you $16 and send you on your way. You need to have your title with you for this transaction, they will keep the title, and send you a new one with the new class in the mail.

So you think you are "bending the law" , with the "good person" at the DMV? BTW, I'm in NY!

Your messing with the wrong people! You and the the "good person" will find out soon enough! Why would you put yourself into a position to perjure yourself?

If your truck is in an accident, and your "permanent bed cover, etc" is off, what do you think is going to happen, when the police see your pass plates?

I don't think the food is very good in the state pen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So its UNDER 5500 lbs. for pass. plates on a pickup eh? Thats screwey!

I tried to get Pass plates when I had my 01 2500 LD and they told me it weighed too

much and the DMV person mentioned 4900 lbs. !

Is your truck now noted as a "SUB" or suburban on your registration instead of a pickup?

Oh well...Your problem is solved and I bet your plates cost less too!

Posted

Since your truck is over 5500 lbs, you have a choice;

- You can put a cap on it and register it as suburban/passenger

- You can lie to DMV and tell them you have a cap (you will get a new title & reg that says suburban instead of truck) but you will then run the risk of getting two tickets "improperly registered" and the "commercial vehicle" that you already got

The law is written to make it your problem (instead of the DMV's) if you get the wrong classification - the DMV refuses to inspect your vehicle to see if a cap is really on it.

I'm moving to Florida next week. Any issues registering a HD down there? Can I go with pass. plates? The FL DMV web site isn't clear on what I can do.

Thanks in advance!!

Not sure about that! My pickup that I bought new in Fla. had reg. passenger plates.

At the time Fla. had no different imprint on the plate (like NY ie; commercial, bus, taxi

etc.) to describe the different class that it may be registered as.

Also unlike NY you didn't have to add weight (when new) for cargo/addl. weight you

may carry either.

HINT: Before you register your truck have it re-weighed at a certified scale and

register it under the factory dry weight not the NY weight with the added cargo cap.

so your plates will be cheaper.

But that was the 80s so who knows ?

I tried that & it turns out my truck is heavier than the registration weight (with nothing in it and driving to the scales on fumes).

(My title has the "actual" weight, not 9200lbs.)
