not to be an ass but it is hosted on mobil's website...not the best place to do comparisons IMHO.

I hear ya. That's why I am seeing what others have to say. I was hoping somebody had some oil analysis or other data...

Amsoil ASL 5-30 is rated for 25k. 15k who cares. The hardest thing is to buy into a brand of oil, as long as nothing bad happens it's the greatest oil in the world. I run Amsoil because they have a wide range of products and I only need to keep one brand of things on hand. And it's good oil, the best?, thats in yours and my mind who we think is the best.

Regardless of which oil is in my truck, I'm not comfortable going beyond 5000 miles.

I already go about 7000 miles on Mobile 1. Apparently, Mobile 1 says they will warranty the engine for a specified number of miles. The extended performance is guaranteed for 15K miles. I drive about 34xxx miles per year, so I rack up the miles pretty quickly. I'd still follow the oil monitor, and I know I'll need to change it before 15K miles. I guess having an oil that is made for extended intervals might make me feel better.

I hear ya. If I was driving 34k per year I'd be doing a tire rotation and oil filter change every 5k miles and putting fresh oil in every 10 interval..... While using an oil that's rated for 15k+ miles

Yeah with 90% of mine and my wife's driving in town, 5000 miles is my limit also on Mobil 1.

Once I switch to Mobil 1 at the next oil change, I'll go from 3,000 intervals to the 5,000 interval mark (like sk1er18). My truck is mostly a garage queen these days so it takes about 6 months to get to the 5,000 mark anyway. If I were driving as much as you, I would probably reconsider though. :)

I stated in another post that with my 97 Sierra I was doing once a year oil changes based on my oil analysis from Kendall oils, the last time I had it done I was up to 11,000km's or 1 year, which ever came first?

After they quit doing the analysis's for free I switched to Mobil-1 synthetic and continued the once a year oil change as I believe Mobil-1 to be every bit as good as Kendall and probably better(according to bob is the oil guy forum)

To me if your running synthetic but change it out at 5000 miles or less your wasting your money?

Todays oils have come a long long ways over the last 10-15yrs so running a non-synthetic in anything is not going to hurt a thing, especially if it is drained at 5000miles or less!

When was the last time anyone has ever heard of an oil related engine failure?

If Mobil-1 says their new oil is good for 15,000 miles then I would have no problems running it to that and then some as I believe probably their regular synthetic could run to that as well with no worries?

I also seen a show quite a few yrs ago (5-8) it was based on NY city taxi-cabs, the worse possible driving conditions one could imagine! All the vehicles tested were just running regular dino oil and even in these types of conditions (stop and go, excessive idling, pollution etc) the oils tested were still good at 12,000 miles.

That's what I'm thinking. If GM recommends that we follow the OLM (with dino oil), I'm thinking that running synthetic will be just fine. I'm not really posting to debate the extended interval theory. Honestly, I had not seen this "extended performance" oil from Mobile 1 before. I was pleasantly surprised to see the 15K mile interval.I looked at some oil analysis results from several people running the extended performance, and they are getting good results. Heck, most people running Mobile 1 are getting good results at 9K miles. I respect peoples decision to change it at 3K miles. I'm not trying to change your mind. :0 Thanks for all your input. After reading the good reports, I'm going to get this in my truck next oil change, and then I will get the oil analyzed to see how it performs.

Yeah it all depends on how you look at it. To me, especially since I do all of my own work (so a full synthetic oil change costs me $40-$45), the cost of fresh oil every 5k miles, even if its capable of 10k or more is a worthwhile investment.

To others who dont (or dont like) doing their own work, then it may not be as worthwhile since you're likely to pay $80+ for a full synthetic oil change at a shop.... so in that case, you may want to get that 7500 or 10,000 mile interval.

So it's all about perspective. IMO, it's money well spent especially when considering the cost of our trucks.

**however, like i said earlier.. If i was driving so much as to put over 30k per year on the truck, i would reconsider and probably shoot for 10k intervals... especially since constant speed highway driving is much easier on the engine.

Mobil 1 Extended Performance oils have been out for a few years.

It's only $4 or 5 more per 5qt jug at Walmart. That last time I checked, Mobil 1 5W30 was around $24/jug and the Extended Performance version $28/jug. No brainer...

I've been using the 5W30 and using GM's OLM on my 2008 Sierra Denali. It's probably around 10 months between changes give or take.

From what I have read(here, and on Bob is the oil guy),

The GM OLM is software that use a complicated algorithm to determine oil life. And is based upon conventional oil. The OLM has no idea that you are using synthetic oil....or extended life synthetic oil.

I am running Mobil1 5-30 in my new truck...have about 4500 miles on this oil now....and have about 61% oil life left. My wife mistakenly got me the extended life mobil1 5-30 for me a few weeks ago. I plan on using it...and changing it when the OLM says to. I know I could leave it in there and run it alot longer.....but for now, I will follow the OLM during the warranty period.

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
