Quick Oil Drain Valve

I'm thinking of getting one of these valves for my '09 5.3

Just wondering if anybody has one and had any issues with it? I do a little bit of off-roading.....usually nothing really major though. Just a bit concerned about damaging it and losing all the oil....that wouldn't be good! The drain plug is on the side of the pan....so it wont be sticking down below the motor....but it will stick out from the pan a bit.

I'd like to get the one with a nipple, so I can attach a small section of hose to make draining oil easier.

Thanks for any input!

Used them in the past.

Work great.

Almost as good as sliced bread.

But...

For me, if I can see it so can road alligators and other debris.

Prefer not to find out the hard way that it got hit AND broke.

So, it is not on my current 5.3 just for that reason.

I don't see why it would cause a problem. Maybe if you hit something pretty solid it might come off, but if it hits that, your going to smack you oilpan pretty hard as well.

The lever has to be lifted and turned in order for it to operate. I've seen a lot of reviews of these and not once have I seen anything about one accidentally opening.

I would imagine they are fine. Not entirely sure why one is needed... but everybody has a right to do as they see fit.

I installed one after the first few oil changes I did myself...you know what a PITA the oil changes are for these trucks/year.

I don't know about the newer years though...maybe they applied some thought and made the necessary changes? New truck owners will have to chime in here.

I love that valve though. It makes the job much quicker and cleaner. No regrets for me.

No wench needed.

No hot oil on fingers.

No splashed oil.

No un-controled oil flow.

No lost plug.

No stripped threads.

No missing washer.

No leaks.

Once you used one it is hard to not have one.

I had one on my 05 and loved it!I had the nipple version so I put a hose on it and drained the oil directly into my waste container.

For offroading I put a spring clip around it so that the lever couldn't pop up to turn.

I will be putting on on my 08, probably at my 10k mile change

No wench needed. I'm assuming you meant "wrench" :)

Funny, I have never had any of those items listed be a problem for me?

Oil changes have never been a problem. Simple 15 minute job, no muss, no fuss.

I honestly do not see how people can bitch about such a simple task? :(

I had one on my Colorado and loved it. Never had a problem with it and that truck was off-road more then it was on. With this truck, I can basically sit under it and change the oil so its still really easy. Still thinking about getting another valve with nipple though, b/c its that much easier.

It goes without saying that this design is great and it really takes the hassle out of changing one's oil.

The *only* concern I have is that the opening is so small that it does not allow for a quick and thorough flushing of the oil from the drain pan. What I mean by that is that, with a regular drain plug, once pulled, the oil will rush out very fast and take with it all the contaminents and metal shavings that have accumulated in there.

With this drain plug, the flow is at a much slower rate, and, ultimately, gravity won't be able to pull all of the gunk out because there's no "force" behind it.

Ex. Take a soda bottle and pop a tiny hole with a pin in it. Watch the rate at which the liquid empties. Now poke an ice pick through...notice the difference.
