U-joints

With my Truck now showing 135,000 miles and Towing my Boat,I have been thinking about putting on New U-joints.

Also let me said that I am not having any Problems or issues with them.So I'm looking for some input,what do you guys think.Leave them alone or Put on New ones. Thanks guys...Mike

If you are just being cautious, then get a vehicle check (including U-joints, drive shaft, brakes, cooling system, etc..) before you head out on the highway with your boat/trailer each season.

What are the signs that they have gone bad...squealing?

I agree with the others here. U-joints will give you signs when that start to wear out. Nothing wrong with replacing them but it doesn't appear to be necessary now.

Mine went over 200,000 miles in my 99 2500 before I got chicken and changed them, but they still didn't show any noise or looseness. I was just chicken. A U-joint will make noise for a good while before going nucular (a Dubya-ism), buuuut, 'a good while' might be pretty short while on a cross country trip at 85 mph. Chicken is ok sometimes.

I just changed mine, at the reccomendation of my friend who rebuils transmissions. He said bad ones will tear up a transfer case.

Squealing, squeaking, clunking, clicking, popping etc....

i let mine squeel for a week before i changed them... most annoying week of my life.
