Steering "Clunk" on 2005's?

My HD is now showing the same signs of the infamous "steering clunk" that my '03 had. Has anyone with a 2005 HD had this problem? I would have figured that GM might have its engineers correcting real problems (like this) instead of seeing how many times they can change the body style of vehicles and how many more electrical crap they can throw in a vehicle. Yes, I "slightly" ticked off even thinking that this may be the problem :D and it has existed since 2003. It seems to me that problems like this and having to pay for the labor and parts under warranty is why GM is in financial turmoil.

As I said in another post, I am losing loyalty to GM due to things like this. I have always been die-hard GM (only owning 2 non-GM vehicles which were both daily drivers).

Thanks for the rant session and please respond if you have a 2005 HD with this problem.

My '05 GMC CC 1500 has it at 13k miles.

I actually think I am going to get the Borgeson unit for mine and skip the multiple useless trips to the Dealer to have the GM unit "fixed". I went through that with my '03 and didn't find it useful.

I had the intermediate steering shaft "replaced" on my 2004, at 19k miles, now at 31k it has the same problem. I know some people complained that they greased the shaft and never replaced it, I cant stand the thought of taking it back in for service. The passenger door seal has never been right from day 1, and they have tried 3 times to fix it. Nothing like driving down the road doing 65 and you cant hear the radio over the wind noise!

My truck has ~8000 miles and has already started which I guess even adds more "fuel to the fire" with this situation :D . I have several things I want corrected so I will be visiting the dealership in the very near future (passenger side speaker is busted, muffler "rattle", and now the steering shaft problem). My 1996 Honda Civic with 143,000 miles doesn't have this many issues :D .

What is the Borgeson unit? I have not heard of this (maybe I need to read more :flag: )??

I think I will write a letter to GM (I know they don't care but it will make me feel better :D ).

Ahh, I'm not alone in this thought process. My warranty ran out on my 03 about 2 months ago. I thought I started feeling the dreaded steering clunk about a week before I hit 36K. I never had the time to run it into the dealer. The weather started to get colder and the clunk started to get worse....grrrrr.

I called the dealer last week about whether this item was covered since it appears that so many have reported premature failures. The SM said that it was not a safety issue so it would not be covered by a recall or considered (38k on my truck). Regardless, I asked what a replacement would cost, he said ~70 for the part, $150 total. I have never gotten out from a dealer repair for less than $300.00

Who knows, but I don't think I would put one of their replacements on if the 05's are still having the same problem. This really burns me. I would almost bet that this part is on National Backorder. It kind of reminds me of our 98 bonneville when I hydralically locked the motor due to a faulty intake manifold at 60K. EGR value port had a nice hole pumping Deathcool right into the intake. Bad design and Bad part - lots of 3.8's put down for this reason- No GM assistance.

I thought someone out there had a post regarding the Borg. install. Nothing came up on the search here, maybe over at Diesel Place.

I feel your pain.

My 05 started having the steering column clunk with about 3,700 miles on it. Frustrating as all hell. It used to be that a model as old as the current Silverado would have most of the defects corrected by 5-6 years into the model year. I guess GM doesn't really give a rats ass about producing a quality vehicle.

I agree :D . For what we are paying for these trucks, it seems like they could give us quality!

My Silverado had it years ago and they took the assembly apart and greased it. No problems since.

If it makes you feel any better, my wifes Impala clunks like crazy when you LOOK at the steering wheel! Must be a "GM" thing!

Go down to your dealer and ask the SM or SW if there isn't something they can do for you regarding warranty repair. They have room to give on warranty repairs regarding exact expiration. It's up to the SW or SM as to whether or not they will work with you.

Just my 2¢

I really want to go with the Borgeson unit but refuse to pay for something to make the truck better when they can "fix" it under warranty  . I'll go with the Borgeson after my warranty finally runs out. Looks like I'll add that to the list of things for them to fix when I make it to the dealership.

For me I will go straight to the Borgeson and skip the multiple trips to the dealer to fix the problem. I went through that on my '03 and wont do it again. 3 or 4 trips to the dealer to fix a part that will fail again after the warranty runs out is a waste of time to me. I would like GM to offer some "credit" against the Borgeson, but suspect there is little or no chance they would do that.
