A Study Of Automotive Gear Lubes

I thought I would post this for some to read and see the results of different gear lubes in various tests. The lower the number the better the product, kind of like a golf score.

Yes it is a study that AMSOIL had accomplished. Note that it was done by an independent laboratory. Please keep an open mind that if these facts were false then the other manufactures would be taking AMSOIL to court in a heartbeat. They can't because it is all fact and is how each of the oils performed accordingly.

For those of you that are familiar with Interstate 8 Between San Diego and Imperial Valley this gear lube lowered our axle temps by 27 degrees rear and 13 degrees front compared to the OEM GM gear lube our truck came with. This was pulling just under GVW 13,000 between our truck and trailer every other weekend for 14 months. Great Stuff!

Something to ponder...Amsoil is a small company with only blending facilities, they don't have refineries to produce synthetic base stock oils.. Who do they buy these pao base stock oils from???

Their major supplier of PAO base stock is Exxon/Mobil, the largest producer of synthetic oils in the world. They purchase some Group III base stocks from Shell, Petro Canada, and others. About 90% of their additive packages come from Lubrizoil.

Just something to ponder.

My thoughts exactly.

Yes this is so.

It is the final product that belongs to AMSOIL. :)

I wasn't saying it was a bad thing. All the smaller boutique blenders are in the same boat, not large enough to have their own refineries, Redline as well who uses a mostly Group 5 ester base oil. Even some of the larger folks buy from Exxon/Mobil.

Yes this is true. Such a small company could never financially afford to run a refinery. But they have got the additive packages nailed to improve on the big boys product.

Amsoil buys the add pack as well, from Lubrizoil and they are not the only ones who buy add packs from them. I don't believe Mobil 1 uses Lubrizoil for their add packs but if memory serves me right I believe Valvoline and maybe Castrol edge may use them. I will have to do some digging. Now I am old as dirt and my memory fails me on ocasion.

Don,

So if Amsoil buys the same base oil from the big oil companies and the ad pak is the same as Castrol and Valvoline then the tests from an independent lab on this oil should all be the same correct? I am not seeing this, Amsoil must be adding a few addional items of their own to the above right?

I think I will let this one ride. I don't use Amsoil. I will NEVER use their products for several reasons I won't get into here. I have never said it was a bad oil. I just don't believe it to be the magic elixir that they make it out to be. There are many oils that are just as good that sell much cheaper and not sold through MLM.

I was just trying to show that they are dependent on other oil producers and use what is on the market and can be purchased and used by any one.

And who do you think pays for all those 'independent lab test'. You don't think they would ever show any that didn't come out in their favor????

Have a good one,

Don
