Ny Plates

I recently learned of NY's newest way to stick it to it's residents. They are changing plates, a new color, and all motorists will be required to have the new ones by Apr 01. The main reason for the change is at $25 per vehicle it will raise $129,000,000 for the state. If they would let me keep my old plates I would gladly send them the money just to stay out of the DMV. Is NY the only state doing stupid stuff like this? They still have most of an anticipated 5 billion dollar deficit to close so I am scared to death of the things to come.

That's nuts! In NJ they've changed the plates a few times, but the old ones are still valid.

Sounds like a waste of a shitload of metal, paint, and money to me.

They changed our plates here in Pa. about 8-9 years ago,But it didn't cost any extra, and we didn't have to go to the DMV.

Yeah ... I saw that ... It is complete crap. But you may keep your plates to the tune of $50.00 per vehicle.

The state is hurting, so the want to make some $$$ in the process ...

Washington State plates have to be replaced every 7 years.

They tried to do the same thing up here in British Columbia. They put new plates out, cause we are having the 2010 Olympics...and everyone was supposed to have them on by Apr of this year...at 50 bucks a set. The people had an uproar about it..using the argument that if you cant afford the Olympics why did you bid...the government quickly turtled and than the plates were passed off as optional and a collectors item...so they are now 75 bucks a set, but only if you want them.

I don't think the Olympics are going to do as good for us as the government thinks they are...but we'll see.

I believe it is $25 for the new plates and if you want to keep your current plate # it is an additional $20-30

And yes it does suck!

But its no surprise.... With sales tax @ almost 9% , and gas prices higher than elsewhere, we are use to the raping :D

Not mad at the plates man....they're just mad at having to pay out the money to replace their perfectly good plates, with new ones...because someone in office says so.

I would be pissed too...spend 25 bucks because someone just decided that you should spend 25 bucks.

Wow...for once, Ontario comes ahead. I only have to buy the initial plates for my travel trailer (any trailer really). The plates never expire, and they're only $35.

But then again, the yearly renewal for car plates are $78 each year.
